The high intrinsic accuracy and regularity of airborne laser sensors makes highly conceivable the extraction of semantic information related to the recorded 3D-points. In this respect, a new algorithm has been developed in order to classify the initial cloud of points into ground/non ground earth points and generale accurate Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) on a regular grid. Our approach is based on a multiple pass classification process. An estimation of the ground is performed within overlapping neighborhood and laser points are classified with regard to this ground estimation. The algorithm moves toward the neighbor where the average altitude is the lowest. We then compare the vicinity of the terrain with the estimated ground and apply a linear correction. As it goes along, points are filtered many times until we vote for the final label. The estimated ground surface is then the input of an energy minimization algorithm (ICM) which consider laser points as a set of attractors. The final DTM will be a trade off between internal properties and its closeness to ground laser points. The resolution may be fine enough to proceed relevant micro relief analysis especially in a rural environment. The accuracy achieved on GCP.s: RMS X = 2.2 m, RMS Y = 2.3 m, RMS Z = 1.1 m; and on independent check points (ICP.s) RMS X = 5.0 m, RMS Y = 2.9 m, RMS Z = 4.7 m. DTM has been generated automatically with the use of MATCH-T Inpho software and filtered with in-house software. DTM prepared on the basis of SPOT stereo data has been checked against reference data - DTM generated from aerial photographs in scale 1:26 000. The accuracy of DTM generated with SPOT 5 HRS within the HRS Scientific Assessment program (HRS-SAP) of ISPRS and CNES on site 9 Chiemsee (Germany) is also presented. Geomatica OrthoEngine of PCI has been used for orientation and DTM generation. Compared to previous works, this approach uses a very generic modeling of buildings as polyhedral shapes with no overhang, in which external knowledge is introduced through constraints on primitives. Using planes as base primitives, the algorithm builds up an arrangement of planes from which a 3D graph of facets is deduced. In a so-called "compatibility graph" where the nodes are the initial facets of the 3D graph and edges between two nodes state that both facets belong to at least one common hypothesis of building, it is shown that maximal cliques supply all the hypotheses of buildings that can be deduced from the arrangement of planes. Among these hypotheses the choice is done through a bayesian formulation that balance data adequacy and caricature needs. Results are provided on real images and show the validity of the approach that remains very generic on the contrary to model-based methods while bringing extemal architectural information through geometric constraints, which generally lacks in data-driven algorithms. Bundle adjustment is the problem of refining a set of parameters (internal calibration, external calibration, 3D model). The refinement is performed by the minimization of a cost function. In usual photogrammetric applications, this cost function is based on image tie points and 3D control points. The cost function measures the distance between the observed data and the model. Linear features are especially important when dealing with architectural or terrestrial images, since they do not require segment extremity to match. So, they are easier to detect automatically within particular scenes (buildings, landscapes...). First, we present the basic concepts of bundle adjustment and the integration of linear features. Using the same concept, the linear feature model is based on the distance between the 3D line re projection in the image and the detected image segments. We describe an algorithm for the resolution of this non-linear least-square problem under constraints. Second, we study the influence of these features on two cases. The first case is a calibration polygon, with a large overlap between images. The second one is a façade of a building. We compare a statistical evaluation of the reliability of the estimated parameters to the theoretical bounds calculated with the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hessian matrix associated to our problem. We stress that segments can be relevant features and can highly increase precision. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3D du bâtiRésumé : (Auteur) During the past decade, the automatic generation of 3D city models has been a constant topic of research for several universities and cartographic or photogrammetric institutes. These 3D city models have a great potential for many applications, there is a real demand for. The costs of data acquisition are still high. The choice of the input data for a framework is one of the most important key to the production line. The object of this paper is to study the potential and impact of different input data contexts. Therefore, we use an operational building extraction framework able to reconstruct buildings from aerial images and cadastral maps. Concerning the reconstruction modules the buildings can be extracted with fully automatic methods as a prismatic extraction or a model driven algorithm. Although this framework has been initially developed for an aerial image context, laser Digital Surface Model (DSM) and satellite images context has been studied. So, on several datasets, 3D city models are produced through this approach with aerial or satellite images with different resolutions (from 80 cm to 20 cm) or laser scanning DSM. An external 3D reference allows to evaluate from qualitative and quantitative points of view. The results obtained from each input data context are compared. Finally, for each input data context, we discuss the different possibilities of 3D city models specifications, especially for the level of details, geometric accuracy and exhaustiveness.
