Decisions most often have to be taken in the dimensions of space and time. Availability of integrated spatial information services is thus important for policymakers, planners, and managers as well as for citizens and their organizations, irrespective of where they are in the world. The strategy followed by the INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community) initiative is a valuable information source for the development of principles and procedures in spatial information management, particularly environmental management. The work done within INSPIRE can also be used to develop specifically adapted solutions for the spatial and environmental information management of urban agglomerations, the megacities. This paper describes a good practice example of a German regional SDI—the approach implemented by Rhineland-Palatinate. The web-based implementation of this regional SDI supports the aim of the INSPIRE directive, namely, improving the usability of spatial data compiled by different authorities. The outlined procedures help to clarify which kind of information has to be provided in which format so that it enhances the understanding of the complex interactions between human activities and their environmental impacts, which are crucial particularly in megacities. The solution presented in this paper, therefore, can be seen as a prototype of a practical realization of a feasible SDI, which can be generalized to larger urban areas.
