[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The advent of Web 2.0 has emerged abundant but often unstructured user-generated georeferenced data, such as those from Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) initiatives. In many cases, these data can be considered as complementary to the authoritative geospatial data. With the increasing availability of multi-source geospatial data, the efforts for geospatial data integration have gained momentum, aiming at gathering maximum information to answer sophisticated questions that cannot be answered using a single data source. Although there are various approaches employed for this purpose with different degrees of success, semantic web methods and tools have not been tested sufficiently in this scope, particularly for multi-scale urban building data integration and enrichment. Attempting to fill this gap, in this study, multi-source and multi-scale urban building data were integrated with a geometric matching method based on the overlapping area, then a geospatial ontology was developed to define multi-scale representations and detailed cardinality relations of the building features. Finally, some features from the geospatial ontology were then linked to popular knowledge bases such as DBpedia and YAGO. For the exploitation on the web, query and visualization processes were demonstrated using sample questions. The semantic web enabled to model complex cardinality of relations between the features from three different building data sets using inferencing and Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL). The study showed that integrating different geospatial data sets as a knowledge base can facilitate answering sophisticated questions from different users. [Termes IGN] projectionRésumé : (auteur) World maps can have quite different depictions of reality depending on the projection adopted, and this can influence our perception of the world. In this respect, shape is a significant property that needs to be considered, especially when representing large regions in general-purpose world maps. A map projection distorts most geometric properties (area, distance, direction/angle, shape, and specific curves) and usually preserves a single property or provides a compromise between different properties when transforming terrestrial features from globe to plane. The distortions are mainly classified based on area, distance and direction/angle and analyzed with Tissot’s theorem. However, this theorem offers a local (pointwise) solution, so the distortion assessment is valid at infinitesimal scale (i.e. for very small regions). For this reason, different approaches are required to analyze the distortions at finite scale (i.e. for larger regions). However, there are very few attempts at analyzing and comparing shape distortion of landmasses in world map projections owing to the fact that shape measurement is difficult and usually involves measuring different characteristics. Seeking to fill this gap, in this study, compactness and elongation distortion measures are introduced. In this regard, 16 world map projections are analyzed and compared with these distortion measures in a GIS environment, based on map datasets of continents and countries. An analysis of the effect of the levels of detail of the datasets is also presented. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Developments in production, sharing and use of spatial data and information involve revisiting the role and scope of cartography. Cartography is a core discipline for spatially modelling, investigating and mapping natural and cultural environments, developing location-aware applications, establishing spatial data infrastructures and forming spatially enabled societies. In this context, spatial data handling provides key tools for creating spatial databases, integrating spatial data, producing geographic information and maps and so on. Although cartography plays a key role in many phases of such activities, it tends to be introduced only as visualization phase of spatial data handling. On the other hand, it is sometimes regarded to encompass entire phases of spatial data handling. So this article investigates the relationships between cartography and spatial data handling, management and use, and on this basis, proposes a modern and comprehensive framework for cartography to contribute to restoring the full conceptual breadth of the discipline. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) Detection and characterisation of spatial patterns is crucial for cartographic generalisation since it entails preserving the patterns as much as possible within scale limits. Building alignments are commonly confronted patterns in the topographic maps/databases. They are perceptually recognised in accordance with relevant Gestalt factors, namely proximity, similarity, common orientation and continuity. This study is concentrated on how to characterise building alignments detected by automated or manual methods. To this end, new measures based on Delaunay triangulation and regression line/curve are established to correspond to the Gestalt factors. The relationship between the measures and Gestalt principles has been illustrated with a decision tree. An index value was computed by total sum of measures’ values to compare and order alignments from quality aspect. Additionally, a supervised classification was performed with C4.5 algorithm thus a decision tree was obtained to be able to both associate the quality categories with the measure values and automatically assign alignments into a quality class. The findings demonstrate that proposed measures are substantially effective for representing Gestalt factors. The proposed methods can potentially enhance and ease the characterisation of building alignments in topographic map generalization. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) A structure recognition technique is presented that can be employed for contextual building and built-up area generalisation in medium-scale topographic maps. Owing to various spatial configurations, a contextual mechanism is necessary to achieve acceptable results in cartographic generalisation. Spatial structures are usually implicit in data, and advanced analysis and processing methods are required to detect them. This technique is based on auxiliary geometric data structures and spatial analysis methods. A case study is performed with a topographic data set, using an interface developed in an object-oriented geographic information system (O-O GIS). The proposed approach was found to assist and improve automation.
