[Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The Internet contains a great wealth of information available online. People search engines, such as WhitePages (http://www.whitepages.com), gather personal-level demographic data, including full name, address, age and household members. Requiring only a surname and locational reference (e.g. city or postal code) as the minimum search criteria, such people search engines can be perceived as a gigantic database of demographic records. The objective of this article is to outline the development of a web-based demographic data extraction tool for population monitoring. In this study, a web prototype was developed to extract web demographics of the Vietnamese-American (VA) population in Texas, an ethnic minority with unique migration history, from WhitePages. After post-processing, the personal-level demographic data represent 40.3% of 202,003 VA in Texas reported by the American Community Survey (ACS) 2009. While all enumeration strategies, the web approach included, have their own strengths and weaknesses, this study suggests an alternative approach that is complementary to existing enumeration strategies. More research and development are needed to validate the accuracy of web demographics and further enhance data navigation and extraction rules. The utilization and release of web demographics must be cautious with regards to privacy and integrity of personal identity. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents two decision support plug-ins in free GIS software: ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. The ubiquitous WebGIS Analysis Toolkit for Extensive Resources (uWATER) focuses on providing GIS analysis functions: spatial and attribute queries in the public services tool for users with limited access to commercial GIS software. The interface of uWATER is general enough to support decision-making in numerous management issues in natural resources, economics and agriculture. The uWATER-Pumping Assessment (uWATER-PA) toolkit, on the other hand, is an extended package targeting the specific environmental issue of groundwater pumping impacts. The uWATER-PA package is an excellent alternative to evaluating complex groundwater pumping assessment issues before investing significant time, labor, and funds in monitoring and detailed scientific study. It incorporates simulation of the physics of groundwater flow and user interaction into GIS software. A graphical user interface makes both data entry and interpretation of results intuitive to non-technical individuals. Results are presented as colored drawdown maps and can be saved in GIS format for future dissemination. The impact of drawdown on existing wells can be characterized and mapped, through the use of uWATER's spatial query capabilities and the drawdown maps generated by uWATER-PA. [Termes IGN] teinteRésumé : (Auteur) Recently, Tsai presented an efficient algorithm which uses the ratio value of the hue over the intensity to construct the ratio map for detecting shadows of color aerial images. Instead of only using the global thresholding process in Tsai's algorithm, this paper presents a novel successive thresholding scheme (STS) to detect shadows more accurately. In our proposed STS, the modified ratio map, which is obtained by applying the exponential function to the ratio map proposed by Tsai, is presented to stretch the gap between the ratio values of shadow and nonshadow pixels. By performing the global thresholding process on the modified ratio map, a coarse-shadow map is constructed to classify the input color aerial image into the candidate shadow pixels and the nonshadow pixels. In order to detect the true shadow pixels from the candidate shadow pixels, the connected component process is first applied to the candidate shadow pixels for grouping the candidate shadow regions. For each candidate shadow region, the local thresholding process is performed iteratively to extract the true shadow pixels from the candidate shadow region. Finally, for the remaining candidate shadow regions, a fine-shadow determination process is applied to identify whether each remaining candidate shadow pixel is the true shadow pixel or not. Under six testing images, experimental results show that, for the first three testing images, both Tsai's and our proposed algorithms have better detection performance than that of the algorithm of Huang , and the shadow detection accuracy of our proposed STS-based algorithm is comparable to Tsai's algorithm. For the other three testing images, which contain some low brightness objects, our proposed algorithm has better shadow detection accuracy when compared with the previous two shadow detection algorithms proposed by Huang and Tsai.
