We have found a strong correlation between the in situ sea ice thickness and the SAR-derived depolarization factors (copolarized correlation and cross-polarized ratio). The observed relationships have demonstrated not only a categorical difference between FYI and multiyear ice (MYI) but also a one-to-one continuity in the scatter plots, rather than being clustered. It clearly shows that the observed correlations are not merely from the categorical difference in scattering mechanism between FYI and MYI and that there might exist a one-to-one relationship between thickness and depolarization factors at least in our deformed ice case. This suggests that depolarization factors could be effective SAR parameters in the estimation of wintertime sea ice thickness. Numerical model simulations explained some portions of the correlation by employing multiple scattering on the sea ice surface and volume scattering within the low-density subsurface layer. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Coastline recession is one of the best indicators of coastal erosion. Three methods for computing coastline recession - the baseline approach, the dynamic segmentation approach and the area-based approach - have been used, each of which has one or more drawbacks. To overcome these problems, a new methodology for measuring coastline recession is proposed, using buffering and non-linear least squares estimation. The proposed method was compared with the three existing methods with respect to two simulated cases and two real coastlines. Test results confirmed that the new method is more reliable than the three other methods, all of which are susceptible to variability of recession, scale, number of line segments, length of coastlines and direction of the baseline. The proposed method, incorporating two physically meaningful values - magnitude and variability of coastline recession according to the mean and standard deviation of coastline offsets, respectively - presents itself as an effective alternative method of assessing coastline recession. [Termes IGN] zone inondableRésumé : (Auteur) The Helmand River wetland represents the only fresh-water resource in southern Afghanistan and one of the least mapped water basins in the world. The relatively narrow wetland consists of mostly marshes surrounded by dry lands. In this study, we demonstrate the use of the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) Interferometric SAR (InSAR) to detect the changes of the Helmand River wetland water level. InSAR images are combined with the geocentric water level measurements from the retracked high-rate (18-Hz) Environmental Satellite (Envisat) radar altimetry to construct absolute water level changes over the marshes. It is demonstrated that the integration of the altimeter and InSAR can provide spatio-temporal measurements of water level variation over the Helmand River marshes where in situ measurements are absent.
