[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Readability is a major issue with all maps. In this study, we evaluated whether we can predict map readability using analytical measures, both single measures and composites of measures. A user test was conducted regarding the perceived readability of a number of test map samples. Evaluations were then performed to determine how well single measures and composites of measures could describe the map readability. The evaluation of single measures showed that the amount of information was most important, followed by the spatial distribution of information. The measures of object complexity and graphical resolution were not useful for explaining the map readability of our test data. The evaluations of composites of measures included three methods: threshold evaluation, multiple linear regression and support vector machine. We found that the use of composites of measures was better for describing map readability than single measures, but we could not identify any major differences in the results of the three composite methods. The results of this study can be used to recommend readability measures for triggering and controlling the map generalization process of online maps. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Following the INSPIRE directive, several countries are now setting up geoportals. These geoportals have view services that offer new opportunities for users to easily display rich and personalized geographic data. However, they also raise new challenges. One challenge is the absence of the traditional cartographer, which sets requirements for the development of automatic methods that optimize the presentation of the data. This article discusses five issues for the improvement of map presentation —semantics, geometries, levels of detail, labels, and symbols— and reviews some related methods. The development of this type of method is essential for the success of view services in the future. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) The generation of maps in real-time web-services introduces challenges concerning map legibility. As these services lack the important input of a traditional cartographer, analytical measures of the legibility are called for. The aim of this study was to develop such legibility measures, and to evaluate them with the help of expert users. Measures of the amount of information, spatial distribution and object complexity were developed and evaluated. The results indicated that some of the measures could be used to describe map legibility. [Termes IGN] objet cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A real-time map must not contain too much information. Therefore, we need measures of map information that could be guidelines for the selection of data layers and the real-time generalisation process. In this paper we evaluate measures of the amount of information and the distribution of information. The evaluation is performed by (1) defining measures, (2) implementing the measures, (3) computing the measures for some test maps, and finally (4) comparing the values of the measures with human judgement of the map information. For amount of information, we found that the measures number of objects, number of points and object line length had better correspondence with human judgement than object area. We also found that measures based on the size of Voronoi regions of objects (respectively points) can be used for identifying the distribution of information. The results are based on the testing of only building objects. Future work should extend the test, using all object types. [Termes IGN] service web géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Following the Inspire directive, several countries are now setting up geoportals. This paper focuses on the cartographic issues raised by view services in these geoportals. The problem with view services, from a cartographic perspective, is the absence of the traditional cartographer who optimizes the presentation of the cartographic data. In order to enhance the readability of the maps automatic methods should be used. The paper presents four types of methods for improving the readability: semantic, conflation generalization and symbolization methods, as well as some ideas of how the technical implementation of these methods could be performed.
