In the last decade, the operations from fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar such as the Japanese ALOS/PalSAR, the Canadian Radarsat-2 and the German TerraSAR-X and their easy data access for scientific use have developed further the research and data applications at L,C and X band. As a consequence, the wider distribution of polarimetric data sets across the remote sensing community boosted activity and development in polarimetric SAR applications, also in view of future missions. Numerous experiments with real data from spaceborne platforms are shown, with the aim of giving an up-to-date and complete treatment of the unique benefits of fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data in five different domains: forest, agriculture, cryosphere, urban and oceans. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (auteur) Terrestrial radar interferometry (TRI) can measure displacements at high temporal resolution, potentially with high accuracy. An application of this method is the observation of the surface flow velocity of steep, fast-flowing aglaciers. For these observations, the main factor limiting the accuracy of TRI observations is the spatial and temporal variabilities in the distribution of atmospheric water vapor content, causing a phase delay [atmospheric phase screen (APS)] whose magnitude is similar to the displacement phase. This contribution presents a geostatistical analysis of the spatial and temporal behaviors of the APS in Ku-Band TRI. The analysis is based on the assumption of a separable spatiotemporal covariance structure, which is tested empirically using variogram analysis. From this analysis, spatial and temporal APS statistics are estimated and used in a two-step procedure combining regression-Kriging with generalized least squares (GLS) inversion to estimate a velocity time-series. The performance of this method is evaluated by cross-validation using phase observations on stable scatterers. This analysis shows a considerable reduction in residual phase variance compared with the standard approach of combining the linear models of APS stratification and interferogram stacking. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture and wet biomass changes between two noninstantaneous SAR observations markedly affect the displacement estimates obtainable with Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). The separation, the modeling of these influences besides their uncoupling from the displacement signal, and the atmospheric disturbances are still unsolved issues for several repeat-pass interferometric applications. This paper focuses on the separation of vegetation changes from the other phase contributions affecting repeat-pass measurements over vegetated areas. These phase terms mainly relate to changes in soil moisture, atmospheric delays, and surface deformation. The separation is achieved with a first-order scattering solution decomposing the observed HH and VV DInSAR phases in the sum of several phase terms. The latter mainly consider the changes in soil surface scattering and in the two-way propagation through a vertically oriented vegetation canopy. No assumption is made on the spatiotemporal evolution of the displacement and atmosphere. The overall approach is tested on a L-band data set acquired over an agricultural area. Upon calibration, the model allows for estimating changes in wet biomass based on the nonzero HH–VV DInSAR phase difference observed over several birefringent agricultural fields. The obtained biomass estimates provide then a correction for the effect of vegetation changes on the observed HH and VV DInSAR phases. Deprived of the vegetation contribution, the remainder phase terms can be more easily explored for further analyses, e.g., the estimation of soil moisture changes and/or surface movements in vertically oriented vegetated areas. [Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the multifaceted effect of the effective spatial baseline, as expressed through the vertical (interferometric) wavenumber, on the inversion of forest height from polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Pol-InSAR) data. First, the role of the vertical wavenumber in relating forest height to the interferometric (volume) coherence is introduced. Through the review of the forest height inversion from Pol-InSAR data, the effect of the vertical wavenumber on the inversion performance is evaluated. The selection of optimum with respect to forest height inversion performance, vertical wavenumbers is discussed. The impact of the acquisition geometry and terrain slopes on the vertical wavenumber and their consideration in the inversion methodology is addressed. The individual effects discussed are demonstrated by means of airborne repeat pass Pol-InSAR acquisitions in L- and P-band acquired over different forest conditions, including a boreal, a temperate, and a tropical forest test site. The achieved forest height inversion performance is validated against reference height data derived from airborne LIDAR acquisitions. [Termes IGN] interféromètrie par radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) TanDEM-X and TerraSAR-X platforms form together the first spaceborne single-pass polarimetric interferometer in space. This allows, for the first time, the acquisition of spaceborne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (Pol-InSAR) data without the disturbing effect of temporal decorrelation. This paper aims to assess the potential of such data for forest applications. For this, single- and dual-pol data acquired over a boreal, a temperate, and a tropical site were investigated to characterize X-band penetration and polarization diversity of the interferometric coherence measurements. Pol-InSAR forest height inversion schemes have been proposed and implemented for the singleand dual-pol cases and cross validated against LIDAR reference measurements for all sites. The single-pol inversion relies on an external ground digital terrain model (DTM) and performed well for all sites with correlation coefficients r2 between 0.80 and 0.98. The dual-pol inversion does not require an external DTM but depends on the visibility of the whole forest layer. Accordingly, its performance varied with forest structure and season: The best performance was achieved for the summer acquisition of the boreal test site (r2 = 0.86) and for the winter acquisition of the temperate test site (r2 = 0.77). For the tropical test site, only a weak correlation (r2 = ~0.50) could be established.
