[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (auteur) The emerging single-photon laser scanning has made technological breakthrough in the collection of airborne laser scanning data. In principle, single-photon systems require only one detected photon for successful ranging. Further, the point density on the ground can be 10–100 times higher for single-photon lidar data than that obtained with multi-photon systems at the same flight altitude. This has great potential to reduce operation costs. Single-photon lidar technology is assumed to be the best for data acquisition when high point densities are required over very large areas, or when improvements in measurement rates can significantly reduce data acquisition costs, such as in nationwide laser scanning programmes, where the whole country is repeatedly covered with data every 5–10 years. This study investigates single-photon lidar and conventional multi-photon laser scanning data for their potential in characterizing ground and forest attributes. Performance is evaluated in a boreal forest by a comparative analysis, where single-photon lidar measurements with SPL100 (Leica/Hexagon) from two flight heights (1900 m and 3800 m) are compared with data from the Optech Titan (400 m) multi-photon airborne laser scanning (ALS) under summer conditions (i.e. leaves on). We found that SPL100 from both altitudes provides forest attribute estimates with comparable accuracy to that of Optech Titan from 400 m using an area-based method. This demonstrates that point density and flight altitude do not have significant impact on forest attribute estimation using the area-based approach. As a result, SPL100 is a cost-efficient alternative to a conventional laser scanner for forest inventories at large scale. There are systematic differences in behavior of the data sets due to differences in ranging sensitivity, beam size, and point density. We observed a higher proportion of ground returns in the SPL100 (3800 m) than in SPL100 (1900 m) data. Both SPL100 data in general produced a higher proportion of ground returns than Titan single channel did in structurally more homogeneous and one layer stands while higher proportion of ground returns from Titan than from SPL100 data in multi-layer stands. Forest structure and flight altitude has a notable impact on the distribution of points and further characteristics of the vertical structures. The pulse of Titan sensor penetrated deeper into the canopy than SPL100. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite images provide spatially explicit information on forest change covering wide areas. In this study, bistatic TanDEM-X (TDX) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data were used to derive digital surface models (DSMs) of forest areas using SAR interferometry (InSAR). The capability of change features derived from bi-temporal InSAR DSMs to detect forest height (90th percentile of canopy height distribution, H90) and density variations was investigated. Moreover, changes in the forest above-ground biomass (AGB) were estimated from height changes between two InSAR DSMs. Bi-temporal airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, aerial orthoimages and an ALS-based AGB change map from a study area in Southern Finland were used as references. The results indicate that the InSAR height change of a forested area correlates more with vegetation density change than with height change. The correlation between the InSAR mean height change and the height change feature from ALS was 0.76 at stand level. Correspondingly, the correlation between the InSAR mean height change and the ALS penetration rate change was 0.89. The AGB changes predicted based on InSAR height change agreed well with the reference data; the root-mean-square error (RMSE) was 20.7 Mg/ha (18.5% of the mean biomass in 2012) at stand level and 27.4 Mg/ha (27.0%) for 16 × 16 m grid cells. The results show that TDX DSMs can be used to detect biomass changes of different orders of magnitude, e.g. due to logging and thinning. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports on a study of measuring stem curves of standing trees of different species and in different growth stages using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Pine and spruce trees are scanned using the multiscan approach in the field, and trees are felled to measure them destructively for the purpose of obtaining reference values. The stem curves are automatically retrieved from laser point clouds, resulting in an accuracy of ~1 cm. The corresponding manual measurements yield similar accuracy but fewer measurements at the upper parts of tree stems, compared with the automated measurements. The stem volumes based on stem curve data and field measurements and the best Finnish national allometric volume equations (using tree species, height, and diameters at heights of 1.3 and 6 m as predictors) result in similar accuracy. The measurement accuracy of the stem curves and stem volumes is similar for both pine and spruce trees. The results of this paper confirm the feasibility of using TLS to produce stem curve data in an automated, accurate and noninvasive way and indicate that the point cloud provides adequate information to accurately derive stem volumes from standing trees. The stem curves and volumes retrieved from point clouds can be employed in various forest management activities, such as the calibration of national or regional allometric curve functions and the prediction of profits in preharvest inventories. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate forest biomass mapping methods would provide the means for e.g. detecting bioenergy potential, biofuel and forest-bound carbon. The demand for practical biomass mapping methods at all forest levels is growing worldwide, and viable options are being developed. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a promising forest biomass mapping technique, due to its capability of measuring the three-dimensional forest vegetation structure. The objective of the study was to develop new methods for tree-level biomass estimation using metrics derived from ALS point clouds and to compare the results with field references collected using destructive sampling and with existing biomass models. The study area was located in Evo, southern Finland. ALS data was collected in 2009 with pulse density equalling approximately 10 pulses/m2. Linear models were developed for the following tree biomass components: total, stem wood, living branch and total canopy biomass. ALS-derived geometric and statistical point metrics were used as explanatory variables when creating the models. The total and stem biomass root mean square error per cents equalled 26.3% and 28.4% for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), and 36.8% and 27.6% for Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.), respectively. The results showed that higher estimation accuracy for all biomass components can be achieved with models created in this study compared to existing allometric biomass models when ALS-derived height and diameter were used as input parameters. Best results were achieved when adding field-measured diameter and height as inputs in the existing biomass models. The only exceptions to this were the canopy and living branch biomass estimations for spruce. The achieved results are encouraging for the use of ALS-derived metrics in biomass mapping and for further development of the models. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Recent research results have shown that the performance of digital surface model extraction using novel high-quality photogrammetric images and image matching is a highly competitive alternative to laser scanning. In this article, we proceed to compare the performance of these two methods in the estimation of plot-level forest variables. Dense point clouds extracted from aerial frame images were used to estimate the plot-level forest variables needed in a forest inventory covering 89 plots. We analyzed images with 60% and 80% forward overlaps and used test plots with off-nadir angles of between 0° and 20°. When compared to reference ground measurements, the airborne laser scanning (ALS) data proved to be the most accurate: it yielded root mean square error (RMSE) values of 6.55% for mean height, 11.42% for mean diameter, and 20.72% for volume. When we applied a forward overlap of 80%, the corresponding results from aerial images were 6.77% for mean height, 12.00% for mean diameter, and 22.62% for volume. A forward overlap of 60% resulted in slightly deteriorated RMSE values of 7.55% for mean height, 12.20% for mean diameter, and 22.77% for volume. According to our results, the use of higher forward overlap produced only slightly better results in the estimation of these forest variables. Additionally, we found that the estimation accuracy was not significantly impacted by the increase in the off-nadir angle. Our results confirmed that digital aerial photographs were about as accurate as ALS in forest resources estimation as long as a terrain model was available.
