[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Cartographic generalization research has focused almost exclusively in recent years on topographic mapping, and has thereby gained an incorrect reputation for having to do only with reference or positional data. The generalization research community needs to broaden its scope to include thematic cartography and geovisualization. Generalization is not new to these areas of cartography, and has in fact always been involved in thematic geographic visualization, despite rarely being acknowledged. We illustrate this involvement with several examples of famous, public-audience thematic maps, noting the generalization procedures involved in drawing each, both across their basemap and thematic layers. We also consider, for each map example we note, which generalization operators were crucial to the formation of the map’s thematic message. The many incremental gains made by the cartographic generalization research community while treating reference data can be brought to bear on thematic cartography in the same way they were used implicitly on the well-known thematic maps we highlight here as examples. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) An automated method of variable digital elevation model (DEM) smoothing is presented. Using variably sized kernels to perform filtering, the method is driven by the entropy of local z-values in the DEM, i.e. the amount of information necessary to convey the elevation variety in the neighborhood of each pixel. This paper presents the method in service of low-pass filtering in order to smooth the raster, though other neighborhood-based filters could be implemented as well. When used in smoothing, the method successfully retains detail in areas of higher relief variation and suppresses it in areas of lower variation, thereby retaining more salient features like ridges, peaks, or incised valleys, while diminishing flatter ones. Varying the neighborhood size with which entropy calculations are made allows for filtering through continuous map scale, enabling multi-scale representation. The method also includes a simple correction for smoothed pixels such that their z-value range reflects that of the input DEM, thereby ensuring that subsequent products such as generated contour lines remain within correct ranges. Several illustrations are given of the method's results. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) In the same way that discrete global grid systems (DGGS) are used to index data on the spherical Earth, they can aggregate point data, with their spherical polygons serving as bins. DGGS are particularly useful at multiple map scales because they are spatially hierarchical and exist on the sphere or ellipsoid, allowing large or small scale binning without projection distortion. We use DGGS in a free and open-source pedagogical tool for teaching students about the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP). Our software application uses Dutton’s quaternary triangular mesh (QTM) to bin global data points geodesically with counts or measures of any theme at multiple levels. Users can interactively select the level to which the data are binned by the QTM, as well as translate the whole tessellation east or west so that points fall into and out of different bins. These two functions illustrate the scaling and zoning aspects of the MAUP with dynamically-drawn choropleths on the surface of a virtual globe that the user can zoom and rotate, allowing visualization at virtually any cartographic scale. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Several everyday cartography applications do not require sharply precise base maps, and in fact benefit from their generalization or deliberate obscuration, such as tourist or transit maps. Additionally, raster data fine enough for a given map scale are not always available. We present a method of creating an impressionistic land cover base map for topographic mapping in which the above two conditions are true, using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) of the US Geological Survey (USGS). The method is based on reclassification, upsampling, constrained randomization at class boundary edges, and deliberate use of colors with very similar lightness values. The method spans both scientific geospatial data treatment and artistic cartographic design, and both generalizes and enhances the data. The processing, automated in ArcGIS™, is detailed, and examples of the product are provided.
