[Termes IGN] téléphone intelligentRésumé : (Auteur) Smartphones have widened the possibilities for low‐cost close‐range image acquisition for three‐dimensional (3D) modelling. They allow the rapid acquisition of large amounts of data for a wide range of applications. However, the accuracy of the models and the automation possibilities depend on the image acquisition conditions and application requirements. In this study, the accuracy and reliability of the derived photogrammetric 3D models are evaluated on a spherical set‐up for close‐range applications (c.30 cm). Different numbers of images, network configurations, targets, devices and camera calibration methodologies are tested and evaluated. Results show that for this close‐range application high accuracy (0·2 mm) and reliability can be achieved. The number of images did not significantly affect the accuracy but was vital for tie‐point detection and image orientation. The use of artificial targets was found to be the key factor in increasing the final accuracy. In contrast, the image calibration strategy and the characteristics of the imaging device did not have a great impact on the results. [Termes IGN] site archéologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Nowadays there is a huge proliferation of fully automatic image-based solutions producing either three-dimensional (3D) point clouds or 3D models. However, the reliability of the output is not usually reported and clarified. This paper presents a comparison of the 3D modelling results achieved on two rock art shelters at separate archaeological sites using a high-resolution digital camera. The 3D point clouds were produced using automatic image-based photogrammetric and computer vision software running either locally (FOTOGIFLE and VisualSFM) or through a web-based reconstruction service (Autodesk 123D Catch). The first two automatic approaches are compared with a manual bundle block adjustment. Dense image matching was undertaken to densify the point clouds prior to 3D modelling. The derived 3D models are compared with a time-of-flight laser scanning dataset that was used as ground truth. Statistical analysis shows significant metric differences on the digital surface models for the different solutions. [Termes IGN] fil à plombRésumé : (Auteur) Radial and decentring distortion parameters have long been reported as fundamental elements in camera calibration, especially in digital close range photogrammetry. This paper reports on an investigation for the determination of both radial and decentring distortion parameters using analytical plumb-line calibration. Straight line patterns, ranging from 1, 2, 4, 10 and up to 20 lines, not strictly plumb, are examined on a set of distorted imagery. Additionally, not only the number of straight lines but also the linear image distribution is analysed. For that purpose, linear features have been distributed in different positions and orientations over the whole of the imagery. Furthermore, the relationship between the parameters mentioned and the location of the principal point is also analysed, and shows how sensitive they are to deviations from the centre of the sensor. The motivation for this paper is the measurement of the minimum number of linear features for proper calibration of non-metric digital cameras. Both radial and decentring distortion parameters are examined. Finally, some line patterns are recommended for making the plumb-line calibration technique a reliable, easy and fast procedure. Photogrammetrists could use it as a first step in the procedure of camera calibration; users who are not experts in photogrammetry could employ it as a final step.
