[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses the suitability of different cartographic design variants for visually communicating recommended routes. We performed a user study, investigating the potential of six different design variants (color hue, distortion, length distortion, size, spacing, and symbols) for influencing route choice using cartographic visualization methods while recommending a longer, but less congested route. The visualizations for all design variants have been prepared in three different levels of intensity of modification (weak, medium, and strong). Although the input data (traffic density) is the same for all representation methods, variations are each visualized using different cartographic design principles. Our results showed that in general, for the majority of routing scenarios, the participants’ route choice has been significantly influenced toward choosing the recommended route – indicating that the modification of route visualizations does actually lead to a different route choice behavior. Results further revealed that for most variants, willingness to choose the recommended route increases with higher intensity of modification. While some of the design variants like symbols or length distortion have been found effective for recommending routes at all levels of intensity, others like size and spacing have not been found suitable. A comparison between route choices and estimated route characteristics suggested a close relationship between willingness to choose the recommended route and the characteristics participants associate with the representation. In particular, route visualizations that create an impression of faster, more convenient, or more fluent travel experience are more likely to influence route choice behavior. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) are essential surveying products for terrain based analyses, especially for overland flow modelling. Nowadays, many high resolution DTM products are generated by Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS). However, DTMs with even higher resolution are of great interest for a more precise overland flow modelling in urban areas. With the help of mobile mapping techniques, we can obtain much denser measurements of the ground in the vicinity of roads. In this research, a study area in Hannover, Germany was measured by a mobile mapping system. Point clouds from 485 scan strips were aligned and a DTM was extracted. In order to achieve a product with completeness, this mobile mapping produced DTM was then merged and adapted with a DTM product with 0.5 m resolution from a mapping agency. Systematic evaluations have been conducted with respect to the height accuracy of the DTM products. The results show that the final DTM product achieved a higher resolution (0.1 m) near the roads while essentially maintaining its height accuracy. Especially in urban areas, they lead to serious damages and endanger the citizens’ safety. Therefore, real-time information about such events is desirable. With the increasing popularity of social media platforms, such as Twitter or Instagram, information provided by voluntary users becomes a valuable source for emergency response. Many applications have been built for disaster detection and flood mapping using crowdsourcing. Most of the applications so far have merely used keyword filtering or classical language processing methods to identify disaster relevant documents based on user generated texts. As the reliability of social media information is often under criticism, the precision of information retrieval plays a significant role for further analyses. Thus, in this paper, high quality eyewitnesses of rainfall and flooding events are retrieved from social media by applying deep learning approaches on user generated texts and photos. Subsequently, events are detected through spatiotemporal clustering and visualized together with these high quality eyewitnesses in a web map application. Analyses and case studies are conducted during flooding events in Paris, London and Berlin. We perform geometry and topology reconstruction of the network in a multistep process. Our main contributions are the formulation of an explicit intersection model with a score function that accounts for consistency with the raw tracking data, as well as for a topology prior and the search for the best model by maximization of this score function using a Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler. We demonstrate the viability of our model-based approach with experiments on GPS data sets of varying size and data quality, followed by a comparison with results achieved by alternative, heuristic approaches.
