[Termes IGN] tectoniqueRésumé : (Auteur) Well-documented geological data (from both field and satellite) in the Deccan Volcanic Provinces (DVP) in and around the Dalvat region, Nasik District, India has been analysed by Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and reported in this paper so as to relate the geology and structures with recent seismicity. It has been the belief among earth scientists that the Deccan Traps in Maharashtra, India is tectonically stable as the region attained solidity long ago. However, recent activity in the study area altered this concept and it is now accepted that seismic activity is still continuing on a mild scale. As such, the need has arisen to take into consideration historical as well as recent geological data to study in detail the tectonic setup in the Deccan Traps.
Using the well-known relationship between the shear zone, lineaments, and geomorphology, and incorporating these with tectonic events, an attempt has been made to explore the geology and structures in and around the Dalvat region. Field observations and signatures on remote sensing data show that there is evidence of fault traces in the form of shear zones and slickensides in the Deccan Traps near the Kosurde, Dhanoli, Chikhli, and Manchandar villages of the Nasik District. The study has further been incorporated with seismic density data. Magnitudes of 3.9 were recorded as the maximum micro-epicentres, and they fell on the shear fractures detected in the area of study.
In order to identify seismically vulnerable areas, seismic hazard zonation (SHZ) mapping has been carried out. Different data layers, including structural, lithological, geomorphological, drainage, and soil have been visually interpreted, scanned, and rectified. A rose diagram of the lineaments shows trends in the NNE–SSW to NS falling on major seismic zones of the study area, showing weaker zones beneath the surface. Raster images were digitized for conversion to a vector coverage using ERDAS 8.6. and ArcGIS 8.3. The ordinal scale (qualitative) relative weighting rating technique was used to give a seismic hazard index (SHI) value to delineate various seismic hazard zones; namely very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) An automated approach to identifying landslides using a combination of high-resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation derivatives is offered as an alternative to aerial photographic interpretation. Previous research has demonstrated that per pixel spectral response patterns are ineffective in discriminating mass movements. This technique utilizes image segmentation and digital elevation data in order to identify mass movements based not only on their reflectance but also on their shape properties and their geomorphic context. Dividing the classification by process into debris slides, debris flows, and rock slides makes the method far more useful than methods that group all mass movements together. A hierarchical classification scheme is utilized to eliminate areas that are not of interest and to identify areas where mass movements are probable. A supervised classification is then conducted using spectral, shape, and textural properties to identify failures that were greater than 1 ha in area. The resulting accuracy was 90 percent for debris slides, 60 percent for debris flows, and 80 percent for rock slides. [Termes IGN] turbidité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) This study concerns the quantification of suspended particulate matter in the highly turbid estuarine waters of the Gironde, France, from high spatial resolution remotely sensed data, SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) High Resolution Visible (HRV), Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). The methodology is based on calibration relationships established between the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) signal and suspended particulate matter concentration (SPM), from in situ optical measurements. These relationships are valid in the long term as Rrs ratios between near-infrared (NIR) and visible wavebands are relatively independent of the particle grain-size and mineralogy. Consequently, they can be applied to satellite images, even if no simultaneous in situ measurements are carried out concurrently with the satellite overpass. Selected satellite sensor data are corrected for atmospheric effects using radiative transfer code, then converted into surface water SPM concentrations according to the established calibration relationships. Resulting SPM maps are presented for different river flow and tidal conditions. These maps are used to locate the maximum turbidity zone and observe its tidal and seasonal movements. The high spatial resolution of SPOT HRV and Landsat ETM+ satellite sensor data also shows detailed turbidity features in the estuary, resulting from re-suspension phenomena over banks and turbulent currents. Unfortunately, there are no published techniques using global monitoring satellite sensors to distinguish the resulting subtle changes in ocean colour, so in situ sampling is needed to identify the species in any observed bloom. This paper investigates multivariate classification as an objective means to discriminate harmful and harmless algae and monitor their dynamics using ocean colour data derived from satellite sensors. The classifier is trained and tested using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data, though the method is designed to be generic for other sensors. Time-series results are presented using the new HAB likelihood index and suggest that SeaWiFS has some capability for observing the dynamic evolution of harmful blooms of Karenia mikimotoi, Chattonella verruculosa and cyanobacteria. Further, a multi-band spatial subtraction algorithm is described to automate the identification of bloom regions and improve the accuracy in discriminating HABs.
