[Termes IGN] parc naturel nationalRésumé : (Auteur) The paper investigated the application of MODIS data for mapping regional land cover at moderate resolutions (250 and 500 m), for regional conservation purposes. Land cover maps were generated for two major conservation areas (Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem-GYE, USA and the Pard State, Brazil) using MODIS data and decision tree classifications. The MODIS land cover products were evaluated using existing Landsat TM land cover maps as reference data. The Landsat TM land cover maps were processed to their fractional composition at the MODIS resolution (250 and 500 m). In GYE, the MODIS land cover was very successful at mapping extensive cover types (e.g. coniferous forest and grasslands) and far less successful at mapping smaller habitats (e.g. wetlands, deciduous tree cover) that typically occur in patches that are smaller than the MODIS pixels, but are reported to be very important to biodiversity conservation. The MODIS classification for Pard State was successful at producing a regional forest/non-forest product which is useful for monitoring the extreme human impacts such as deforestation. The ability of MODIS data to map secondary forest remains to be tested, since regrowth typically harbors reduced levels of biodiversity. The two case studies showed the value of using multi-date 250 m data with only two spectral bands, as well as single day 500 m data with seven spectral bands, thus illustrating the versatile use of MODIS data in two contrasting environments. MODIS data provide new options for regional land cover mapping that are less labor-intensive than Landsat and have higher resolution than previous 1km AVHRR or the current 1 km global land cover product. The usefulness of the MODIS data in addressing biodiversity conservation questions will ultimately depend upon the patch sizes of important habitats and the land cover transformations that threaten them. [Termes IGN] trajectographie (positionnement)Résumé : (Auteur) Evapotranspiration rates in Denmark were estimated using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellite data and weather conditions predicted by a high-resolution weather forecast model (HIRLAM). The predictions were used both for atmospheric correction of satellite data and for remote sensing based calculation of net radiation, sensible heat fluxes and evapotranspiration rates. Climate predictions at 12 GMT were used as proxies for the atmospheric conditions at the time of the afternoon satellite passage (12.30-14.30 GMT). The air temperature at the time of the satellite passage was retrieved with a rms error of 1.9ºC, and the rms error of the retrieved air humidity was 204 Pa. The evapotranspiration results were significantly influenced by the spatial distribution of weather conditions. Due to the encirclement of Denmark by sea shorelines, sea breezes extending more than 30 km inland were responsible for the intrusion of cooler air temperatures which increased the sensible heat fluxes and suppressed the evapotranspiration rates. The predictions were linearly related to eddy-covariance flux measurements representing agricultural land, beech forest and conifer forest, but the relationships were also characterized by a large degree of scattering. The results are discussed in relation to inaccuracies and future perspectives. [Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (Auteur) It is important to estimate land surface evapotranspiration (ET) for water resources evaluation, drought monitoring and crop production simulation. In this paper, a relationship between annual ET, integrated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Relative Moisture Index (RMI) was established. Based on this relationship, the spatial distribution and dynamic change of annual ET were estimated for the Yellow River Basin, China from 1982 to 2000. Our analyses involved the use of integrated NDVI data, monthly mean air temperature, and precipitation. Our results showed that the integrated AVHRR NDVI can be used to effectively estimate annual ET in the Yellow River Basin, with an accuracy over 90% for the whole basin. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper demonstrates a methodology for the analysis and integration of airborne hyperspectral sensor data (445-2543nm) with GIS data in order to develop a vulnerability map which has the potential to assist in decision making during post-disaster emergency operations. Hailstorms pose a threat to people as well as property in Sydney, Australia. Emergency planning demands current, large-scale spatio-temporal information on urban areas that may be susceptible to hailstones. Several regions, dominated by less resistant roofing materials, have a higher vulnerability to hailstorm damage than others. Post-disaster operations must focus on allocating dynamic resources to these areas. Remote sensing data, particularly airborne hyperspectral sensor data, consist of spectral bands with narrow bandwidths, and have the potential to quantify and distinguish between urban features such as roofing materials and other man-made features. A spectral library of surface materials from urban areas was created by using a full range spectroradiometer. The image was atmospherically corrected using the empirical line method. A spectral angle mapper (SAM) method, which is an automated method for comparing image spectra to laboratory spectra, was used to develop a classification map that shows the distribution of roofing materials with different resistances to hailstones. Surface truthing yielded high percentage accuracy. Spatial overlay technique was performed in a GIS environment where several types of cartographic data such as special hazard locations, population density, data about less mobile people and the street network were overlaid on the classified geo-referenced hyperspectral image. The integrated database product, which merges high quality spectral information and cartographic GIS data, has vast potential to assist emergency organizations, city planners and decision makers in formulating plans and strategies for resource management. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Preservation of cultivated land is one of China's four basic strategic policies. Timely land use monitoring is a prerequisite of cultivated land management and sustainable utilization. Using digital satellite remote sensing techniques, the intention is to develop a workable procedure for cultivated land change detection in the Yellow River delta region. Four detection methods were assessed. The assessment, in general, suggests that it is difficult to find a single efficient method for cultivated land change detection in the study area, where spectral confusion is widespread due to soil salinization and juxtaposed land use patterns. The knowledge-based visual change detection and classification-result overlay methods are more appropriate than the multi-temporal composite and classification, and image ratioing. The latter two methods are useful and efficient when remote sensing data acquired in the suitable season are available, and distinct spectral characteristics of different land use types exist. The results show that the area of cultivated land in this region decreased by 5321.8 ha over the period 1987 to 1998, i.e. 483.8ha every year, mainly concentrated in the central paddy field region and northeast dry land region.
