[Termes IGN] TRMMRésumé : (Auteur) Eight different fire datasets for Indonesia were compared with each other and to fine spatial resolution burnscar maps. Results show that each dataset detects different fires. More than two-thirds of the fires detected by one dataset are not detected by any other dataset. None of the datasets detect fires in all test areas. Fire regime, satellite sensor characteristics and fire detection algorithms all influence which fires are detected. Fire datasets were not complementing each other as they all had commission as well as omission errors. [Termes IGN] rendement agricoleRésumé : (Auteur) This study demonstrates a unique matrix approach to determine within-field variability in wheat yields using fine spatial resolution 4 m IKONOS data. The matrix approach involves solving a system of simultaneous equations based on IKONOS data and post-harvest yields available at entire field scale. This approach was compared with a regression-based modelling approach involving field-sensor measured yields and the corresponding IKONOS measured indices and wavebands. The IKONOS data explained 74-78% variability in wheat yield. This is a significant result since the finer spatial resolution leads to capturing greater spatial variability and detail in landscape relative to coarser spatial resolution data. A pixel-by-pixel mapping of wheat yield variability highlights the fine spatial detail provided by IKONOS data for precision farming applications. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), a climatic water budget model, and the STATSGO database were used within a GIS environment to determine the influences of hydrologic soil properties on soil moisture and thermal emission in western-central Kansas for a dry year, 2000. Two important variables, waterholding capacity (WHC) and hydrologic soil group (HSG), were controlled in our water budget experiment to evaluate their impacts on soil moisture content (SMC) changes throughout the period. Results showed that HSG affected drought detection and occurrence very little, but WHC variations explained most local variations of soil moisture content. As a strong indicator of relative soil moisture deficit, the Standardized Thermal Index (STI) patterns were also influenced by WHC. Generally, the earlier the soil moisture content drops below 40%, the earlier the STI reaches a threshold value of 0.2 or higher. Vegetation responses to thermal detection lagged behind the STI by up to 8 weeks, which was computed by comparing the STI and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) deviation from a 10-year mean. The spatial pattern of lagtimes was not apparent, but lagtimes were correlated with a WHC component. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose equations for narrowband-to-broadband (NTB) albedo conversion for glacier ice and snow for four types of satellite sensors : thematic mapper (TM), advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR), moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer (MISR). We do this on the basis of spectral albedos and incident spectral irradiances generated with radiative-transfer models of the (sub)surface (a two-stream model) and the atmosphere, respectively. First, we establish equations for reference values of atmospheric components and the surface elevation. These equations describe measurements with root-mean-square differences of ~0.016. We then show that the "reference equations" also perform well when total ozone and aerosol optical depth are changed with respect to the reference. The negative effect of humidity and elevation variations on the performance of the equations can be eliminated by adding a correction term. We argue that narrowband albedos are much less sensitive to variations in the incident spectral irradiance than broadband albedos. Hence, our conclusions about the effects of variations in atmospheric composition and elevation are also valid for equations for NTB conversion proposed in other papers.
