[Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Industrial forest plantation expansion is dramatically impacting the environment (biodiversity, soil, water, etc.) and social sphere. Since the enactment of Decree Law 701 (DL 701) in 1974 under the military government of Augusto Pinochet, forestry practices in Chile have become more intensive (genetic manipulation, high yield clearcutting and short rotation). The law (and its successive updates) covers up to 75% of plantation costs and is the keystone of pine and eucalyptus forest expansion. This paper presents a pluriannual detection model for monitoring and characterizing the high cutting frequency of these timber plantations. Thirteen Landsat and SPOT images taken between 1976 and 2008 are used and combined with ground data (oblique aerial photography, GPS field surveys and field sheets). A trichromatic composition is built from spectral information taken from a Red and Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelength along a temporal gradient of 32 years. This multi-temporal on-screen visual interpretation has led to a dynamic interpretation grid which reflects forest management stages in direct relation with pine and eucalyptus crop cycles. The method was tested on various time-steps covering the entire time period on two spatial scales — local and regional. All the spatio-temporal results are conclusive and the model established by remote sensing is of operational value. [Termes IGN] ultrasonRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Ultrasounds overestimate the MOE value. This paper analyses the causes of this difference and opens the perspective for a novel method allowing the calculation of the correct MOE from ultrasounds or NIRS measurements on cores.
Context : Standardized methods for determining wood modulus of elasticity (MOE) are destructive and require many replicates. Other methods such as NIRS and ultrasound have been developed to characterize wood properties and overcome these constraints.
Aim : The aim of this study was to compare the two MOE measurement methods (NIRS and ultrasound) applied to cores of wood taken from standing trees (Liquidambar styraciflua).
Methods : MOE, measured by an acoustic method in standard samples (360 × 20 × 20 mm), was used as a reference. Then MOE was predicted by an NIRS model and determined using ultrasound in standard samples (360 × 20 × 20 mm), small samples (10 × 20 × 20 mm), and cores (15 mm in diameter).
Result : MOE values determined by acoustic method on standard samples and by ultrasonic method on small samples were correlated (R 2 = 0.72) and were not statistically different. The NIRS PLS regression yielded a model with R 2 cv = 0.80. The link between NIRS and ultrasound on cores was statistically significant (R 2 = 0.68).
Conclusion : The ultrasonic technique determines an apparent modulus enables comparative data analysis. This apparent modulus can be used for quantitative analysis if a corrective model is used. A correction formula to ultrasonic MOE was proposed in the case of a prismatic geometry.

[Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Remotely sensed multispectral imagery, soils and graminoid samples from an abandoned cattle feedlot and adjacent wetlands were used to characterize plant vigour and soil nutrient distribution and evaluate the relationship between soil properties and vegetation reflectance. The feedlot lies on a sandy beach ridge, which likely mitigates the mobility of soil phosphorus. Soil phosphorus remains concentrated directly beneath the feedlot pens, where vegetation indices are low. In contrast, nitrate is transported through preferential pathways into the wetlands, where vegetation indices and plant vigour are high. Although spectral vegetation indices did not show any significant relationship with plant tissue nutrient concentration, the indices showed statistically significant relationships to some soil properties. Results of this study indicate that the abundance of nutrients in the soil does not necessarily enhance plant growth. This can limit the extent that remotely sensed vegetation indices can be used to evaluate soil nutrients concentrations.
