[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Freshwater resources play a central role in social and economic development of modern civilisations, yet their value is often underestimated and neglected in developed countries. In fact, freshwater habitats are facing unprecedented threat because of human activities, and it is necessary to provide reliable water quality indicators to monitor the response of aquatic systems. In this context, remote sensing has a great potential to provide a complementary source of data for monitoring and understanding the processes involved in inland waters around the world at fine temporal and spatial resolutions. The scientific approach adopted in this thesis is based on the integration of complementary sources of information provided by state-of-the-art monitoring methods to foster our understanding of freshwater habitats. Specifically, we demonstrate the additional value provided by combining complementary sensors with bio-geochemical measurements and hydrodynamic models, using a rare event in Lake Geneva which got a wide public attention in local newspapers: a calcite precipitation event. The principal focus of the remote-sensing community has recently been directed towards very turbid waters in order to address the challenges involved with the retrieval of mixed constituent concentrations. In this thesis, I highlight some important challenges relative to clearer waters which also require further attention from the community. Specifically, I provide a solution to account for vertical nonuniformities of water constituent concentrations using simple approximation models in Lake Geneva. Finally, I provide a comprehensive comparison between state-of-the-art atmospheric correction methods, which are presumably relevant for inland water monitoring and applicable to the new constellation of remote sensors. Les tissus urbains sont caractérisés par une complexité liée notamment à la forme, la typologie et la densité. En outre, la densité urbaine est déterminée souvent par les dimensions sociales, culturelles et historiques de chaque région laquelle la ville est localisée. Il est à signaler que la réalisation ou la révision des instruments d'aménagement et d'urbanisme s'appuierait sur les indicateurs de la densité urbaine (COS, CES) pour rendre la réalité à l'échelle des quartiers. Nous attachons à travers cette étude à calculer et déduire ces indicateurs par le biais des images satellitaires ALsat-2A tout en comptant sur une méthode originale et automatique sans faire le déplacement sur le terrain. [Termes IGN] linéamentRésumé : (auteur) Certainly, lineament mapping occupies an important place in several studies, including geology, hydrogeology and topography etc. With the help of remote sensing techniques, lineaments can be better identified due to strong advances in used data and methods. This allowed exceeding the usual classical procedures and achieving more precise results. The aim of this work is the comparison of ASTER, Landsat-8 and Sentinel 1 data sensors in automatic lineament extraction. In addition to image data, the followed approach includes the use of the pre-existing geological map, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) as well as the ground truth. Through a fully automatic approach consisting of a combination of edge detection algorithm and line-linking algorithm, we have found the optimal parameters for automatic lineament extraction in the study area. Thereafter, the comparison and the validation of the obtained results showed that the Sentinel 1 data are more efficient in restitution of lineaments. This indicates the performance of the radar data compared to those optical in this kind of study. [Termes IGN] variable biophysique (végétation)Résumé : (Auteur) The recent launch of the Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (multispectral) missions offers a new opportunity for land-based biomass mapping and monitoring especially in the tropics where deforestation is highest. Yet, unlike in agriculture and inland land uses, the use of Sentinel imagery has not been evaluated for biomass retrieval in mangrove forest and the non-forest land uses that replaced mangroves. In this study, we evaluated the ability of Sentinel imagery for the retrieval and predictive mapping of above-ground biomass of mangroves and their replacement land uses. We used Sentinel SAR and multispectral imagery to develop biomass prediction models through the conventional linear regression and novel Machine Learning algorithms. We developed models each from SAR raw polarisation backscatter data, multispectral bands, vegetation indices, and canopy biophysical variables. The results show that the model based on biophysical variable Leaf Area Index (LAI) derived from Sentinel-2 was more accurate in predicting the overall above-ground biomass. In contrast, the model which utilised optical bands had the lowest accuracy. However, the SAR-based model was more accurate in predicting the biomass in the usually deficient to low vegetation cover non-forest replacement land uses such as abandoned aquaculture pond, cleared mangrove and abandoned salt pond. These models had 0.82–0.83 correlation/agreement of observed and predicted value, and root mean square error of 27.8–28.5 Mg ha−1. Among the Sentinel-2 multispectral bands, the red and red edge bands (bands 4, 5 and 7), combined with elevation data, were the best variable set combination for biomass prediction. The red edge-based Inverted Red-Edge Chlorophyll Index had the highest prediction accuracy among the vegetation indices. Overall, Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery can provide satisfactory results in the retrieval and predictive mapping of the above-ground biomass of mangroves and the replacement non-forest land uses, especially with the inclusion of elevation data. The study demonstrates encouraging results in biomass mapping of mangroves and other coastal land uses in the tropics using the freely accessible and relatively high-resolution Sentinel imagery.
