The current Spectranomics database contains about one half of known tropical forest canopy tree species worldwide, and has become a forecasting asset for predicting aspects of plant functional and biological diversity to be remotely mapped and monitored with current and future spectral remote sensing technology. To mark ten years of Spectranomics, we review recent scientific outcomes to further stimulate engagement in the use of spectral remote sensing for biodiversity and functional ecology research. In doing so, we highlight three major emerging opportunities for the science and conservation communities based on Spectranomics. Soil moisture estimates have been limited to regions that had either bare soil or low to moderate amounts of vegetation cover.
In this study, Simultaneous Land Parameters Retrieval Model (SLPRM) as an iterative least-squares minimization method has been used. This algorithm retrieves surface soil moisture, land surface temperature, and canopy temperature simultaneously using brightness temperature data in bare soil, low to moderate and higher amounts of vegetation cover.
Furthermore, a new index called MSVI (Multi Sensor Vegetation Index) has been introduced to approximate vegetation effects on properly observed brightness temperatures. The algorithm includes model construction, calibration, and validation using observations carried out for the SMEX03 (Soil Moisture Experiment 2003) region in the South and North of Oklahoma. The results indicated about 0.9 percent improvement on soil moisture estimation accuracy using the MSVI.Numéro de notice : A2016-935 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.14358/PERS.82.10.803 En ligne : http://dx.doi.org/10.14358/PERS.82.10.803 Format de la ressource électronique : URL artilce Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=83349

[Termes IGN] Equateur (état)Résumé : (Auteur) Geophysics experts are interested in understanding the behavior of volcanoes and forecasting possible eruptions by monitoring and detecting the increment on volcano-seismic activity, with the aim of safeguarding human lives and material losses. This paper presents an automatic volcanic event detection and classification system, which considers feature extraction and feature selection stages, to reduce the processing time toward a reliable real-time volcano early warning system (RT-VEWS). We built the proposed approach in terms of the seismicity presented in 2009 and 2010 at the Cotopaxi Volcano located in Ecuador. In the detection stage, the recordings were time segmented by using a nonoverlapping 15-s window, and in the classification stage, the detected seismic signals were 1-min long. For each detected signal conveying seismic events, a comprehensive set of statistical, temporal, spectral, and scale-domain features were compiled and extracted, aiming to separate long-period (LP) events from volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes. We benchmarked two commonly used types of feature selection techniques, namely, wrapper (recursive feature extraction) and embedded (cross-validation and pruning). Each technique was used within a suitable and appropriate classification algorithm, either the support vector machine (SVM) or the decision trees. The best result was obtained by using the SVM classifier, yielding up to 99% accuracy in the detection stage and 97% accuracy and sensitivity in the event classification stage. Selected features and their interpretation were consistent among different input spaces in simple terms of the spectral content of the frequency bands at 3.1 and 6.8 Hz. A comparative analysis showed that the most relevant features for automatic discrimination between LP and VT events were one in the time domain, five in the frequency domain, and nine in the scale domain. Our study provides the framework for an event classification system with high accuracy and reduced computational requirements, according to the orientation toward a future RT-VEWS. [Termes IGN] PinophytaRésumé : (Auteur) Winter leaf area index (LAI) of evergreen coniferous forests exerts strong control on the interception of snow, snowmelt and energy balance. Simulation of winter LAI and associated winter processes in land surface models is challenging. Retrieving winter LAI from remote sensing data is difficult due to cloud contamination, poor illumination, lower solar elevation and higher radiation reflection by snow background. Underestimated winter LAI in evergreen coniferous forests is one of the major issues limiting the application of current remote sensing LAI products. It has not been fully addressed in past studies in the literature. In this study, we used needle lifespan to correct winter LAI in a remote sensing product developed by the University of Toronto. For the validation purpose, the corrected winter LAI was then used to calculate land surface albedo at five FLUXNET coniferous forests in Canada. The RMSE and bias values for estimated albedo were 0.05 and 0.011, respectively, for all sites. The albedo map over coniferous forests across Canada produced with corrected winter LAI showed much better agreement with the GLASS (Global LAnd Surface Satellites) albedo product than the one produced with uncorrected winter LAI. The results revealed that the corrected winter LAI yielded much greater accuracy in simulating land surface albedo, making the new LAI product an improvement over the original one. Our study will help to increase the usability of remote sensing LAI products in land surface energy budget modeling.
