[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The use of remote sensing data with other ancillary data in a geographic information system (GIS) environment is useful to delineate groundwater potential zonation map of Ken-Betwa river linking area of Bundelkhand. Various themes of information such as geomorphology, land use/land cover, lineament extracted from digital processing of Landsat (ETM+) satellite data of the year 2005 and drainage map were extracted from survey of India topographic sheets, and elevation, slope data were generated from shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM). These themes were overlaid to generate groundwater potential zonation (GWPZ) map of the area. The final map of the area shows different zones of groundwater prospects, viz., good (5.22% of the area), moderate (65.83% of the area) poor (15.31% of the area) and very poor (13.64% of area). [Termes IGN] surveillance hydrologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This study provides an initial evaluation of a global flood monitoring system (GFMS) using satellite-based precipitation and readily available geospatial datasets. The GFMS developed by our group uses a relatively simple hydrologic model, based on the run-off curve number method, to transform precipitation into run-off. A grid-to-grid routing scheme moves run-off downstream. Precipitation estimates are from the TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA). We first evaluated the TMPA algorithm using a radar/gauge merged precipitation product (Stage IV) over south-east USA. This analysis indicated that the spatial scale (and hence the basin size) as well as regional and seasonal considerations are important in using the TMPA to drive hydrologic models. GFMS-based run-off simulations were evaluated using observed streamflow data at the outlet of two US basins and also using a global flood archive. Basin-scale analysis showed that the GFMS was able to simulate the onset of flood events produced by heavy precipitation; however, the simulation performance deteriorated in the later stages. This result points out the need for an improved routing component. Global-scale analysis indicated that the GFMS is able to detect 38% of the observed floods; however, it suffers from region-dependent bias. [Termes IGN] Oklahoma (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing with multispectral thermal infrared can improve regional estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) by providing new constraints on land surface energy balance. Current models use visible and near infrared bands to obtain vegetative cover, and sometimes use thermal infrared data for land surface temperature. Together these can yield good ET estimates. However, it may be possible to do even better by using remotely sensed thermal infrared emissivity, a surface property related to fractional vegetative cover but independent of plant greenness. Emissivities derived from clear-sky Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations obtained in 2007 over the Southern Great Plains (Oklahoma and Kansas), USA, were compared with changes in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for winter wheat and grazing land. Emissivity changes were independent of NDVI and sensitive to standing canopies, regardless of growth stage or senescence. Thus emissivities were seasonally dynamic, able to detect wheat harvest timing, and helpful for modelling ET. [Termes IGN] Setchouan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) In the early stages of post-disaster response, a quick and reliable damage assessment map is essential. As time is a critical factor, automated damage mapping from remotely sensed images is the expected solution to drastically reduce data acquisition and computation time. Recently, high-resolution satellite images, such as QuickBird data, have been in high demand by damage assessment analysts and disaster management practitioners. However, the existing automated mapping approaches hardly accommodate such high-resolution data. This research aims at developing a new context-based automated approach for earthquake damage mapping from high-resolution satellite images. Relevant contextual information (including structure, shape, size, edge texture, spatial relations) describing the damage situation is formulated and up-scaled on a morphological scale-space. Speed optimization is achieved by parallel processing implementation. The developed approach was tested with two QuickBird images acquired on 26 June 2005 and 3 June 2008 over YingXiu town, Sichuan, China, which suffered the devastating 12 May 2008 earthquake. In comparison to the reference, the developed mapping approach could achieve over 80% accuracy for computation of the damage ratio. Future research is planned to test the approach on various disaster cases for both optical and radar images using a grid-computing platform towards a cost-effective damage mapping solution.
