[Termes IGN] TanzanieRésumé : (auteur) Quantification of forest degradation in monitoring and reporting as well as in historic baselines is among the most challenging tasks in national REDD+ strategies. However, a recently introduced option is to base monitoring systems on subnational conditions such as prevalent degradation activities. In Tanzania, charcoal production is considered a major cause of forest degradation, but is challenging to quantify due to sub-canopy biomass loss, remote production sites and illegal trade. We studied two charcoal production sites in dry Miombo woodland representing open woodland conditions near human settlements and remote forest with nearly closed canopies. Supervised classification and adaptive thresholding were applied on a pansharpened QuickBird (QB) image to detect kiln burn marks (KBMs). Supervised classification showed reasonable detection accuracy in the remote forest site only, while adaptive thresholding was found acceptable at both locations. We used supervised classification and manual digitizing for KBM delineation and found acceptable delineation accuracy at both sites with RMSEs of 25–32% compared to ground measurements. Regression of charcoal production on KBM area delineated from QB resulted in R2s of 0.86–0.88 with cross-validation RMSE ranging from 2.22 to 2.29 Mg charcoal per kiln. This study demonstrates, how locally calibrated remote sensing techniques may be used to identify and delineate charcoal production sites for estimation of charcoal production and associated extraction of woody biomass. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we study the problem of feature extraction for knowledge transfer between multiple remotely sensed images in the context of land-cover classification. Several factors such as illumination, atmospheric, and ground conditions cause radiometric differences between images of similar scenes acquired on different geographical areas or over the same scene but at different time instants. Accordingly, a change in the probability distributions of the classes is observed. The purpose of this work is to statistically align in the feature space an image of interest that still has to be classified (the target image) to another image whose ground truth is already available (the source image). Following a specifically designed feature extraction step applied to both images, we show that classifiers trained on the source image can successfully predict the classes of the target image despite the shift that has occurred. In this context, we analyze a recently proposed domain adaptation method aiming at reducing the distance between domains, Transfer Component Analysis, and assess the potential of its unsupervised and semisupervised implementations. In particular, with a dedicated study of its key additional objectives, namely the alignment of the projection with the labels and the preservation of the local data structures, we demonstrate the advantages of Semisupervised Transfer Component Analysis. We compare this approach with other both linear and kernel-based feature extraction techniques. Experiments on multi- and hyperspectral acquisitions show remarkable cross- image classification performances for the considered strategy, thus confirming its suitability when applied to remotely sensed images. [Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mangroves are very dense, spatially heterogeneous, and have limited height variations between neighboring trees. Delineating individual tree crowns is thus very challenging. This study compared methods for isolating mangrove crowns using object based image analysis. A combination of WorldView-2 imagery, a digital surface model, a local maximum filtering technique, and a region growing approach achieved 92 percent overall accuracy in extracting tree crowns. The more traditionally used inverse watershed segmentation method showed low accuracy (35 percent), demonstrating that this method is better suited to homogeneous forests with reasonable height variations between trees. The main challenges with each of the methods tested were the limited height variation between surrounding trees and multiple upward pointing branches of trees. In summary, mangrove tree crowns can be delineated from appropriately parameterized objectbased algorithms with a combination of high-resolution satellite images and a digital surface model. We recommend partitioning the imagery into homogeneous species stands for best results.
