[Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) This paper discusses a new approach in object extraction from aerial images with association of point cloud data. The extracted objects are captured in a 3D space for reconstructing a 3D model. The process includes three steps. In the first step the targeted objects are extracted from point cloud data and captured in a 3D space. The objects include buildings, trees, roads and background or terrain. In the second step the extracted objects are registered to the aerial image for assisting the object detection. Finally, the extracted objects from the aerial image are registered on the original 3D model for conversion to the point cloud data and then are captured in a 3D space for reconstructing a new 3D model. The final 3D model is flexible and editable. The objects can be edited, audited, and manipulated without affecting another objects or ruin the 3D model. Also, more data can be integrated in the 3D model improve its quality. The aspects of this project are: to reconstruct the final 3D model, and then each object can be interactively updated or modified without affecting the whole 3D model, and to provide a database for other users such as 3D GIS, city management and planning, Disaster Management System (DBS), and Smart City application. [Termes IGN] universitéRésumé : (auteur) 3D scenes within all media indicate a societal preference shift toward 3D presentations. In spite of wide data availability and successful standardization efforts in 3D modeling, it is not a standard practice to offer large-scale topographic references to the end user in the form of 3D models. This motivates to propose automated strategies for the generation of closed 3D representations of a complete urban landscape, which at the same time account for capabilities of consumer-class devices. The campus of Dresden University of Technology served as a test case. The final appearance of the 3D model will be steered directly by the original geographic information system (GIS) data source. Such a “schematic model” displays source classes and attributes by nonphotorealistic rendering. A tested generic workflow can be presented, which programmatically integrates attributed 2D GIS entities and digital elevation model data, checks for compliancy with consistency rules and generates a slim geometric model. Only detailed GIS references can be considered to allow close-range visualization as needed in virtual walks. In delegating the geometric processing to automated workflows, playing room is gained for as well innovative as expressive texturing and, thus, design of the final 3D model. [Termes IGN] volume (grandeur)Résumé : (auteur) The full-scale avalanche test site at Lautaret Pass in the southern French Alps has been used by IRSTEA-Cemagref Research Institute since 1972. Over recent years, two avalanche paths have been used routinely to release avalanches and study avalanche dynamics and interactions between avalanches and obstacles. Avalanche flows are generally dense and dry, sometimes with a powder cloud on top. Main avalanche path no. 2 is dedicated to studies on avalanche dynamics. Within the flow of the avalanche, flow height and vertical profiles of pressure and velocity are measured along a 3.5 m tripod. The snow volume released in the release zone is quantified by differential analysis of laser scanning measurements performed before and after triggering. High-speed positioning of the avalanche front along the track is carried out by terrestrial oblique photogrammetry. Above the dense layer, the upper layer of the avalanche is characterized by particle and air flux measurements. [Termes IGN] modélisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) The “M” in digital elevation models (DEM) stands for model, which literally means “a schematic description of a system, theory, or phenomenon that accounts for its known or inferred properties and may be used for further study of its characteristics.” A DEM fulfills the requirement of “a schematic description” of terrain. However, how to make it account for the “known or inferred properties” warrants further scrutiny. This article outlines three properties of terrain and examines their four implications to DEM generation. The three properties are as follows: (1) each terrain point has a single, fixed elevation; (2) terrain points have an order and sequence that is determined by their elevations; and (3) terrain has skeletons. The four implications to DEM generation methods are as follows: (1) a method must be a bijection; (2) a method must be an isomorphism in order to preserve elevation sequence; (3) a method must guarantee that the vertical error at any point, not just checkpoints, is acceptable in order to assure the vertical accuracy of a DEM; and (4) a method must involve generalization if terrain skeletons are to be preserved. These implications are discussed in the context of light detection and ranging-derived DEMs. Generalization is highlighted as the top priority for future research.
