[Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (Auteur) A very important class of queries in GIS applications is the class of Knearest neighbor queries. Most of the current studies on the Knearest neighbor queries utilize spatial index structures and hence are based on the Euclidean distances between the points. In realworld road networks, however, the shortest distance between two points depends on the actual path connecting the points and cannot be computed accurately using one of the Minkowski metrics. Thus, the Euclidean distance may not properly approximate the real distance. In this paper, we apply an embedding technique to transform a road network to a high dimensional space in order to utilize computationally simple Minkowski metrics for distance measurement. Subsequently, we extend our approach to dynamically transform new points into the embedding space. Finally, we propose an efficient technique that can find the actual shortest path between two points in the original road network using only the embedding space. Our empirical experiments indicate that the Chessboard distance metric (L,) in the embedding space preserves the ordering of the distances between a point and its neighbors more precisely as compared to the Euclidean distance in the original road network. [Termes IGN] SIG ouvertRésumé : (Auteur) At this time, many problems hinder the development of web based applications relying on geographic information : the lack of interoperability between geographic data models implemented in GIS software, the use of proprietary programming languages, the weak capabilities of commercial GIS for the deployment of applications over the Internet, etc. In order to tackle these problems, numerous technologies in software engineering have emerged : standard and extensible object-oriented programming languages with web capabilities, development techniques based on reusable software components and model driven architectures, object-relational database management system enabling the storage and querying of geographic information. Taking benefit from all these more and more mature technologies, a new interoperable platform (named OXYGENE) has been designed and developed at the COGIT laboratory of IGN. It aims at providing an open framework for the development of research applications and allows for the centralisation of codes, their documentation and an easy maintenance/upgrade (preservation of researches). By embedding standard remote procedure call protocols and services description languages, this platform aims at deploying researches undertaken at the COGIT laboratory as true "geographic web services". The architecture and the model of the OXYGENE platform will first be presented and detailed. The development of geographic web services will then be discussed and illustrated with an example stemming from an application implemented at the COGIT laboratory. A competent 3D model forms an efficient foundation for 3D visualization, query and spatial analysis. As a development of the existing 3D models, this study proposes particular improvements in handling complex 3D objects. We present an object-oriented data model for handling complex 3D objects in GIS. First, the conceptual data model is developed based on the principle of object-oriented (00) data modelling. This model is designed based on the following three basic geometric elements: node, segment and triangle. Accordingly, the abstract geometric objects are defined: including points, lines, surfaces and volumes. Second, the corresponding 3D logical model is designed based on the defined abstract objects and the relationships between them. Third, a formal representation of the 3D spatial objects is described in detail. Fourth, a prototype 3D GIS is developed based on the proposed 3D data model. Finally, we describe the results of an experimental study to reconstruct 3D objects using this 3D GIS and a comparison with the performance of other 3D data models. The proposed model is able to handle complex objects, such as complex buildings and TV towers, which is an essential functionality for building large-scale cyber cities, such as for Hong Kong. The proposed data model proves to be very efficient, particularly in visualization and rendering. The experimental results show which the data volume of the proposed model is compacted and the visualization speed for 3D objects is improved, compared with the existing models. Eco-regions are large ecosystems of regional extent that contain smaller ecosystems of similar response potential and resource production capabilities. They can be used as a geographical framework for organizing and reporting resource information, setting bioecological recovery criteria, extrapolating site-level management, and monitoring global change. The objective of this research is to develop a quantitative, multivariate regionalization model that is capable of delineating eco-regions at multiple levels from remotely sensed information and other environmental and natural resources spatial data. The Spatial Pattern Analysis Model developed in this study uses a region-growing algorithm to generate spatially contiguous regions from primitive polygonal land units. The algorithm merges the most similar pair of neighbouring units at each iteration, based on satisfying certain similarity criteria until all units are grouped into one. This model was utilized to develop an eco-region map of Nebraska with three hierarchical levels. In the mapping process, the STATSGO data set was used to build the primitive map units. Environmental parameters included in the model were multi-temporal AVHRR data, soil rooting depth, organic matter content, available water capacity, and long-term annual averages of water balance and growing degree day totals. In this paper, such factors as the error of commission, the error of omission, the discrepant area and the normalized discrepant area are proposed as the error indicators of buffer analysis. Analytical expressions for the error indicators are developed as multiple integrals. A numerical integration method is recommended to find an approximation to the analytical expression.
