[Termes IGN] représentation multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Many geographical databases exist to represent a same part of the world, seen at different levels of detail and with different points of view. The use and management of these databases sometimes require that they be integrated in a single database. An important issue for integration is the ability of analyzing and understanding differences among multiple representations. These differences can be explained by various specifications and updates but can also be due to errors during data capture. In this paper, we describe an approach to detect differences in representation between two geographical datasets and we expose experiments made to acquire rules by an inductive learning process, meant to interpret in an automatic way these differences. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the integration of vector data into a digital terrain model (DTM) to perform flood risk analysis. The integration of geographic 2D vector objects into a DTM usually raises data coherence issues. To address these issues, 2D objects are transformed into 2,5D objects and then integrated into an enriched DTM in a coherent way. We focus our research on objects describing civil engineering works such as roads, dikes, or embankments. Such a coherent integration of 2D objects into a DTM can change flood behaviour simulations deeply and thus predicted damage areas. The first part of this paper describes the general methodology used for road integration. Simple placing of 2D linear roads on a DIM generally gives unrealistic results. Our approach consists in transforming 2D linear data into 2.5D surfaces describing terrain in a more realistic way. We transform 2D linear roads into 2.5D surfacic roads by assigning them a width, and computing their elevation. The altitude of each point of the road is computed with the help of the DTM and the altimetric attribute of nodes, under slope and regularity constraints. Then, we compute a new DTM, resulting from the original DTM constrained by the 2.5D roads. We observe that this integration alters the DTM locally. The second part reports on the analysis of a DTM after the integration of roads. We base our analysis on two main applications: visualisation and hydrology. As roads were initially captured at a much higher scale than the DTM, the creation of a microrelief is observed. This microrelief may contain artefacts, which could create uncertain areas. The study of these areas helps us to define the range of scale and the validation of such methods. By comparing the results obtained by hydrological simulation with our refined DTM and with the initial DTM, we highlight the precision and coherence gained when using this enriched DTM. With our algorithms. the new DTM is more accurate on certain keyareas such as dikes or roads, which are civil engineering works that are very important for flood simulations. The third part focuses on the implementation of these algorithms in an experimental Java GIS platform, linked to an Oracle 9i database. Then this part report on the analysis of our TIN enrichment. The original TIN is locally modified. Some inconsistencies between the original TIN and the vector data are fixed thanks to the integration of new 2.5D information. For example, in the enriched TIN, rivers follow the talwegs. Without 2.5D vector information, talwegs are interpolated from contour lines and are not consistent with the river network. As a conclusion, we suggest that our work can be extended to fit other applications, such as trajectory computation. Note de contenu : INTRODUCTION

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Detailed vegetation databases and associated maps of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a rugged, forested area of more than 2000 km2, were constructed to support resource management activities of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). These detailed vegetation databases and associated maps have a terrain relief exceeding 1700 m and a continuous forest cover over 95% of the Park. The requirement to use 1:12,000 and 1:40,000scale color infrared aerial photographs as the primary data source for mapping overstory and understory vegetation, respectively, necessitated the integration of analog photointerpretation with both digital softcopy photogrammetry and geographic information system (GIS) procedures to overcome problems associated with excessive terrain relief and a lack of ground control. Applications of the vegetation database and associated largescale maps include assessments of vegetation patterns related to management activities and quantification of forest fire fuels. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Many spatially distributed environmental models have been developed for small spatial units (e.g. individual plots or fields). Their application at a regional scale (e.g. large drainage basins) was hitherto not very successful since most models are 'scale-specific'. In most cases the lack of input data is a limiting factor for an appropriate model application at a regional scale. The use of simplified models on the other hand, can only be successful if they have the appropriate degree of complexity. This leads to the following paradox: on the one hand a model should be based on process knowledge so that it will react correctly to changes imposed by the modelling system. Including all available process knowledge, however, will lead to an overparametrisation. The error propagation involved in the poor data quality can then deteriorate dramatically the accuracy of the output results. For optimal model predictions at a regional scale the model complexity has to be in balance with the quality of the available input data. The error involved in a model application can be split in two parts: on the one hand the intrinsic model error because of an incomplete description of the processes and on the other hand the input error because of the use of low quality data. The total error is the sum of both parts. A simplification of the modelling structure will lead to an increase of the intrinsic model error and a decrease of the input error. If observed field values are available they can be used to determine which model structure gives the best results, given the available data. In many cases such validation data are not available. However, also in these cases, a model user should be able to select an optimal model structure. In this paper a technique is presented that allows the determination of the optimal degree of model complexity for an application at a regional scale if no observed field data are available. If the uncertainty of a model parameter exceeds a certain threshold, the model structure must be further simplified by replacement of this parameter by an aggregated value or a constant. The use of the technique is illustrated via the application of a soil erosion model.
