[Termes IGN] problème inverseRésumé : (auteur) The satellite era brings new challenges in the development and the implementation of potential field models. Major aspects are, therefore, the exploitation of existing space- and ground-based gravity and magnetic data for the long-term. Moreover, a continuous and near real-time global monitoring of the Earth system, allows for a consistent integration and assimilation of these data into complex models of the Earth’s gravity and magnetic fields, which have to consider the constantly increasing amount of available data. In this paper we propose how to speed up the computation of the normal equation in potential filed modeling by using local multi-polar approximations of the modeling functions. The basic idea is to take advantage of the rather smooth behavior of the internal fields at the satellite altitude and to replace the full available gravity or magnetic data by a collection of local moments. We also investigate what are the optimal values for the free parameters of our method. Results from numerical experiments with spherical harmonic models based on both scalar gravity potential and magnetic vector data are presented and discussed. The new developed method clearly shows that very large datasets can be used in potential field modeling in a fast and more economic manner. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) The topographic bias is defined as the error/bias committed by continuing the external gravity field inside the topographic masses by a harmonic function. We study the topographic bias given by a digital terrain model defined by a spherical template, and we show that the topographic bias is given only by the potential of an inner-zone cap, and it equals the bias of the Bouguer shell, independent of the size of the cap. Then we study the effect on the real Earth by decomposing its topography into a template, and we show also in this case that the topographic bias is that of the Bouguer shell, independent of the shape of the terrain. Finally, we show that the topographic potential of the terrain at the geoid can be determined to any precision by a Taylor expansion outside the Earth’s surface. The last statement is demonstrated by a Taylor expansion to fourth order. [Termes IGN] potentiel de pesanteur terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) The gravitational potential of a constant density general polyhedron can be expressed both in terms of a closed analytical expression and as a series expansion involving the corresponding spherical harmonic coefficients. The latter can be obtained from two independent algorithms, which differ not only in their algorithmic architecture but in their efficiency and overall performance, especially when computing the coefficients of higher degree and order. In the present paper a comparative study of all these three approaches is carried out focusing on the numerical implementation of the recursive relations appearing in the two algorithms for the computation of the polyhedral potential harmonic coefficients. The performed numerical investigations show that the linear algorithm proposed by Jamet and Thomas (Proceedings of the second international GOCE user workshop, ‘GOCE, The Geoid and Oceanography’, ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, 8–10 March 2004, ESA SP-569, 2004), but so far not implemented, achieves a reasonable accuracy at a computational expense that opens to practical applications, for instance in the field of satellite gravimetry/gradiometry interpretation. The convergence behavior of the linear recursion algorithm is studied thoroughly and a computational procedure is proposed that enables the stable computation of potential harmonic coefficients up to degree 60 when referring to an arbitrarily shaped polyhedral body. [Termes IGN] surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) The determination of local geoid models has traditionally been carried out on land and at sea using gravity anomaly and satellite altimetry data, while it will be aided by the data expected from satellite missions such as those from the Gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer (GOCE). To assess the performance of heterogeneous data combination to local geoid determination, simulated data for the central Mediterranean Sea are analyzed. These data include marine and land gravity anomalies, altimetric sea surface heights, and GOCE observations processed with the space-wise approach. A spectral analysis of the aforementioned data shows their complementary character. GOCE data cover long wavelengths and account for the lack of such information from gravity anomalies. This is exploited for the estimation of local covariance function models, where it is seen that models computed with GOCE data and gravity anomaly empirical covariance functions perform better than models computed without GOCE data. The geoid is estimated by different data combinations and the results show that GOCE data improve the solutions for areas covered poorly with other data types, while also accounting for any long wavelength errors of the adopted reference model that exist even when the ground gravity data are dense. At sea, the altimetric data provide the dominant geoid information. However, the geoid accuracy is sensitive to orbit calibration errors and unmodeled sea surface topography (SST) effects. If such effects are present, the combination of GOCE and gravity anomaly data can improve the geoid accuracy. The present work also presents results from simulations for the recovery of the stationary SST, which show that the combination of geoid heights obtained from a spherical harmonic geopotential model derived from GOCE with satellite altimetry data can provide SST models with some centimeters of error. However, combining data from GOCE with gravity anomalies in a collocation approach can result in the estimation of a higher resolution geoid, more suitable for high resolution mean dynamic SST modeling. Such simulations can be performed toward the development and evaluation of SST recovery methods.
