[Termes IGN] transportRésumé : (auteur) Existing works on moving objects mainly focus on a single environment such as free space and road network, and do not investigate the complete trip for humans who can pass several environments, e.g., road network, pavement areas, indoor. In this paper, we consider multiple environments and study moving objects with different transportation modes, also called generic moving objects. We aim to answer a new class of queries supporting three kinds of conditions: temporal, spatial, and transportation modes. To efficiently provide the result, we propose an index structure called TM-RTree, which takes into account the feature of moving objects in different environments and has the capability of managing objects on not only temporal and spatial data but also transportation modes. This property is not maintained by existing indices for moving objects. Different cases on transportation modes are supported. Correspondingly, several algorithms are developed. The TM-RTree and related algorithms are developed in a real DBMS to have a practical and solid result for applications. In the experiment, we conduct the performance evaluation using extensive datasets and compare the proposed technique with the other two competitors, demonstrating the efficiency and significant superiority of our solution in various settings. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Here we present Tambopata: Who Owns Paradise?, a map-centric, multimedia website created to enrich an educational role playing exercise about biodiversity, conservation, and development in the Amazon (www.geography.wisc.edu/tambopata). The exercise assigns students a character from the Tambopata region of the Peruvian Amazon, and asks them to evaluate four proposed zoning plans from their assigned perspective. Using principles of web cartography, we designed the four proposal maps to communicate complex information and allow for increased exploration. Compared to the previously used static maps, the website increases opportunities for student engagement with the material, incorporates multimedia, and clarifies spatial relationships and land use patterns. The website is available publicly and can be integrated freely into other university and high school courses. [Termes IGN] traitement du langage naturelRésumé : (auteur) Twitter is often used in quantitative studies that identify geographically-preferred topics, writing styles, and entities. These studies rely on either GPS coordinates attached to individual messages, or on the user-supplied location field in each profile. In this paper, we compare these data acquisition techniques and quantify the biases that they introduce; we also measure their effects on linguistic analysis and text-based geolocation. GPS-tagging and self-reported locations yield measurably different corpora, and these linguistic differences are partially attributable to differences in dataset composition by age and gender. Using a latent variable model to induce age and gender, we show how these demographic variables interact with geography to affect language use. We also show that the accuracy of text-based geolocation varies with population demographics, giving the best results for men above the age of 40. [Termes IGN] OpenStreetMapRésumé : (auteur) OpenStreetMap (OSM) constitutes an unprecedented, free, geographical information source contributed by millions of individuals, resulting in a database of great volume and heterogeneity. In this study, we characterize the heterogeneity of the entire OSM database and historical archive in the context of big data. We consider all users, geographic elements and user contributions from an eight-year data archive, at a size of 692 GB. We rely on some nonlinear methods such as power law statistics and head/tail breaks to uncover and illustrate the underlying scaling properties. All three aspects (users, elements, and contributions) demonstrate striking power laws or heavy-tailed distributions. The heavy-tailed distributions imply that there are far more small elements than large ones, far more inactive users than active ones, and far more lightly edited elements than heavy-edited ones. Furthermore, about 500 users in the core group of the OSM are highly networked in terms of collaboration.
