[Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (auteur) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data is being increasingly used as an effective alternative to conventional optical remote sensing to accurately estimate aboveground forest biomass ranging from individual tree to stand levels. Recent advancements in LiDAR technology have resulted in higher point densities and improved data accuracies accompanied by challenges for procuring and processing voluminous LiDAR data for large-area assessments. Reducing point density lowers data acquisition costs and overcomes computational challenges for large-area forest assessments. However, how does lower point density impact the accuracy of biomass estimation in forests containing a great level of anthropogenic disturbance? We evaluate the effects of LiDAR point density on the biomass estimation of remnant forests in the rapidly urbanizing region of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. We used multiple linear regression to establish a statistical relationship between field-measured biomass and predictor variables derived from LiDAR data with varying densities. We compared the estimation accuracies between a general Urban Forest type and three Forest Type models (evergreen, deciduous, and mixed) and quantified the degree to which landscape context influenced biomass estimation. The explained biomass variance of the Urban Forest model, using adjusted R2, was consistent across the reduced point densities, with the highest difference of 11.5% between the 100% and 1% point densities. The combined estimates of Forest Type biomass models outperformed the Urban Forest models at the representative point densities (100% and 40%). The Urban Forest biomass model with development density of 125 m radius produced the highest adjusted R2 (0.83 and 0.82 at 100% and 40% LiDAR point densities, respectively) and the lowest RMSE values, highlighting a distance impact of development on biomass estimation. Our evaluation suggests that reducing LiDAR point density is a viable solution to regional-scale forest assessment without compromising the accuracy of biomass estimates, and these estimates can be further improved using development density. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) The main reflectors of radio telescopes deform due to gravitation when changing their elevation angle. This can be analyzed by scanning the paraboloid surface with a terrestrial laser scanner and by determining focal length variations and local deformations from best-fit approximations.
For the Effelsberg radiotelescope, both groups of deformations are estimated from seven points clouds measured at different elevation angles of the telescope: the focal length decreases by 22.7 mm when tilting the telescope from 90 deg to 7.5 deg elevation angle. Variable deformations of ± 2 mm are detected as well at certain areas. Furthermore, a few surface panels seem to be misaligned.
Apart from these results, the present study highlights the need for an appropriate measurement concept and for preprocessing stepswhen using laser scanners for area-based deformation analyses. Especially, data reduction, object segmentation and laser scanner calibration are discussed in more detail. An omission of these steps would significantly degrade the deformation analysis and the significance of its results. [Termes IGN] réseau hydrographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The detailed topographic information contained in light detection and ranging (LiDAR) digital elevation models (DEMs) can present significant challenges for modelling surface drainage patterns. These data frequently represent anthropogenic infrastructure, such as road embankments and drainage ditches. While LiDAR DEMs can improve estimates of catchment boundaries and surface flow paths, modelling efforts are often confounded difficulties associated with incomplete representation of infrastructure. The inability of DEMs to represent embankment underpasses (e.g. bridges, culverts) and the problems with existing automated techniques for dealing with these problems can lead to unsatisfactory results. This is often dealt with by manually modifying LiDAR DEMs to incorporate the effects of embankment underpasses. This paper presents a new DEM pre-processing algorithm for removing the artefact dams created by infrastructure in sites of embankment underpasses as well as enforcing flow along drainage ditches. The application of the new algorithm to a large LiDAR DEM of a site in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, demonstrated that the least-cost breaching method used by the algorithm could reliably enforce drainage pathways while minimizing the impact to the original DEM. First, the algorithm rapidly detects curb-lines and segments a point-cloud into road and nonroad surface points based on trajectory data recorded by the integrated position and orientation system onboard the vehicle. Second, the algorithm accurately extracts street light poles from the segmented nonroad surface points using a novel pairwise 3-D shape context. The proposed algorithm is tested on a set of point-clouds acquired by a RIEGL VMX-450 mobile LiDAR system. The results show that road surfaces are correctly segmented, and street light poles are robustly extracted with a completeness exceeding 99%, a correctness exceeding 97%, and a quality exceeding 96%, thereby demonstrating the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed algorithm to segment road surfaces and extract street light poles from huge volumes of mobile LiDAR point-clouds.
