[Termes IGN] vecteur propreRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a novel version of the five-point relative orientation algorithm given in Nister [Nister, D., 2004. An efficient solution to the five-point relative pose problem, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 26 (6), 756–770]. The name of the algorithm arises from the fact that it can operate even on the minimal five-point correspondences required for a finite number of solutions to relative orientation. For the minimal five correspondences, the algorithm returns up to 10 real solutions. The algorithm can also operate on many points. Like the previous version of the five-point algorithm, our method can operate correctly even in the face of critical surfaces, including planar and ruled quadric scenes. The paper presents comparisons with other direct methods, including the previously developed five-point method, two different six-point methods, the seven-point method, and the eight-point method. It is shown that the five-point method is superior in most cases among the direct methods. The new version of the algorithm was developed from the perspective of algebraic geometry and is presented in the context of computing a Gröbner basis. The constraints are formulated in terms of polynomial equations in the entries of the fundamental matrix. The polynomial equations generate an algebraic ideal for which a Gröbner basis is computed. The Gröbner basis is used to compute the action matrix for multiplication by a single variable monomial. The eigenvectors of the action matrix give the solutions for all the variables and thereby also relative orientation. Using a Gröbner basis makes the solution clear and easy to explain. [Termes IGN] modèle stéréoscopiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This research study addressed and compared 3D physical and empirical models for stereo-processing and the generation of digital surface models (DSMs) from different stereo high-resolution (HR) sensors (Ikonos and QuickBird). The 3D physical model is Toutin's Model (TM) developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, and the empirical model is the rational function model (RFM). The study also evaluated the conditions of experimentation to appropriately use these 3D models. The first results on stereo-bundle adjustments demonstrated that TM and vendor-supplied RFMs gave similar results with Ikonos as soon as RFM was refined with a shift computed from one GCP. On the other hand, TM gave better results than vendor-supplied RFMs with QuickBird regardless of the polynomial order and the number of GCPs. Due to its relief dependency, QuickBird RFM needed to be refined at least with linear functions computed from at least 6 to 10 GCPs. Some large errors were, however, noted on forward image RFM in column. The DSMs were then generated using an intensity matching approach and compared to 0.2 m accurate lidar elevation data. Because DSMs included the height of land-cover (trees, houses), elevation linear errors with 90 percent confidence level (LE90) were computed and compared for the entire area and three land-cover classes (forests, urban/ residential, bare surfaces). TM and vendor-supplied RFMs with Ikonos, regardless of the method and GCP number, achieved comparable results for all classes, while TM achieved overall better results than vendor-supplied RFMs with QuickBird. All results demonstrated the necessity of refining Ikonos RFM with a shift and one GCP only and QuickBird RFM with lst-order linear functions and 6 to 10 GCPs due to its relief dependency. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of our study was to characterize statistical and spatial details of the errors in a fine toposcale DEM derived by contour data. The fine toposcale DEMs are typically represented in a 5-50 m grid and used in the application scale 1:10000-1:50000. The errors were determined by using high-quality reference data covering the entire study area from an airborne laser scanner. The work was motivated because of the essential role played by the correct characterization of DEM error in error-propagation studies. The results showed that the spatial autocorrelation of the fine toposcale DEM error was the result of a complex combination of random and systematic-like components, and its appropriate modelling by geostatistical methods is problematic because of the small extent of the areas in which the assumption of stationarity is valid. In addition, describing the shape of the DEM error distribution was impossible with a single parameter of dispersion. This was due to a large number of outliers, which suggests that more robust descriptors of the error should be used in addition to conventional error statistics.
