[Termes IGN] surface du solRésumé : (Auteur) Over the last few decades, science has often presented us with detailed information at small points. We might know a lot about some experimental plots on two soil types in a country or a lot about water quality at the mouth of two large rivers. Today we are often asked the question "what is the status of X in all the places between those points?" or "which parts of a river basin are causing our peaks of chemical X in our monitoring program?" The tools described here not only have a wide application within a discipline such as soil science or forestry but have applications across a wide range of disciplines. Producing detailed soil capability maps for precision farming or environmental risk maps for environmental impact assessments are two other areas these tools are applicable. We are only beginning to visualize and experience how to use them to get a job done quicker, cheaper and more accurate. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) For geographical information systems (GIS) to be useful in the management of Japanese paddy fields, it is vital to be able to prepare base maps that define sections of field. We attempted to prepare a base map by detecting the edges of submerged paddy fields from a SPOT image with the use of multiresolution wavelet transform. The raw image of SPOT band 3 was decomposed into a low frequency approximation image and a set of high frequency detailed images to five levels, and then reconstructed. The reconstructed image at the fifth level was obtained from all of the high frequency images except for the low frequency approximation image. The image reconstructed up to full scale was then applied to a zero-crossing scheme and three post-processings-line thinning, removal of isolated pixels, and connection of pixels with their neighbours in order to obtain clear edges. The spatial features of the image indicating the edges obtained by multi-resolution wavelet transform were compared quantitatively with those obtained by using a difference of Gaussian (DOG) filter. The multi-resolution wavelet transform was better than the DOG filter in that the base map obtained by the wavelet transform method represented a 'field block', which is typically composed of 10 holdings of paddy field, more precisely than with the DOG filter, and in that the number of open polygons on this map was smaller, indicating that the wavelet transform method is more suitable for producing the base map in GIS for the management of paddy fields. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3DIndex. décimale : 33.30 Photogrammétrie numérique Résumé : (Auteur) A novel System for automatic building reconstruction from multiple aerial images is presented. Compared to previous works, this approach uses a very generic modeling of buildings as polyhedral shapes with no overhang, in which external knowledge is introduced through constraints on primitives. Using planes as base primitives, the algorithm builds up an arrangement of planes from which a 3D graph of facets is deduced. In a so-called "compatibility graph" where the nodes are the initial facets of the 3D graph and edges between two nodes state that both facets belong to at least one common hypothesis of building, it is shown that maximal cliques supply all the hypotheses of buildings that can be deduced from the arrangement of planes. Among these hypotheses the choice is done through a bayesian formulation that balance data adequacy and caricature needs. Results are provided on real images and show the validity of the approach that remains very generic on the contrary to model-based methods while bringing extemal architectural information through geometric constraints, which generally lacks in data-driven algorithms. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageIndex. décimale : 33.30 Photogrammétrie numérique Résumé : (Auteur) In this dissertation, a new approach to automatic road extraction from high resolution aerial imagery taken over urban areas is developed. In order to deal with the high complexity of this type of scenes, the approach integrates detailed knowledge about roads and their context using explicitly formulated scale-dependent models. The knowledge about how and when certain parts of the road and context model are optimally exploited is expressed by an extraction strategy. It is subdivided into three levels: Context-based data analysis (Level 1) comprises the segmentation of the scene into the urban, rural, and forest area as wells as the analysis of context relations (e.g. the determination of shadow areas and the detection of vehicles). Processing continues in urban areas. To determine salient roads (Level 2) the extraction includes the detection of homogeneous ribbons as preliminary road segments in coarse scale, collinear grouping thin bright road markings in fine scale, and the construction of lanes from groups of road markings and road sides. Then, the lanes are further grouped into larger road objects, so-called road segments. During road network completion (Level 3), road segments detected in overlapping images are fused and gaps in the extraction are iteratively closed by hypothesizing and verifying connections between previously extracted road segments. To this end, local as well as global criteria exploiting the network characteristics are used. The result of network completion are roads that connect junctions or endpoints. A key feature of the presented approach is the incorporation of a scheme for self-diagnosis. With this scheme each hypothesis generated during extraction is internally evaluated so that its relevance for further processing can be assessed. This facilitates decisions inherently appearing during the extraction process. The results achieved with the approach show that the implemented system is able to extract roads in complex environments, i.e. the extraction is also possible when the appearance of roads is heavily affected by other objects. Based on an external evaluation of the results, the system is validated, and advantages but also remaining deficiencies are discussed.
