[Termes IGN] projection polyconiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Some map projections are defined by table values rather than mathematical equations. The most popular and famous one in this category is the Robinson Projection. The Ginzburg projections, which were developed and used in the former Soviet Union, are among the other table-based world projections. A computational method is required in order to efficiently use these kinds of projections in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and similar environments. Function matching for projections based on table values can be realized for a numerical forward transformation. Matched functions also allow the calculation of distortions in the projection easily. In this study, polynomials and radial basis functions, such as multiquadric and thin-plate spline functions, are applied to derive an analytical expression from an array of tabular coordinates. The tests are realized on three table-based polyconic projections, the Ginzburg IV, V and VI. The distortion characteristics of table-based projections are sought by using partial derivatives obtained through numerical approximation. The distortion analysis shows that the Ginzburg V has very reasonable distortions. A solution for the inverse transformation of these projections is also provided. With the awareness of such projections, more alternatives in seeking a suitable map projection in world-scale GIS applications can be proposed. [Termes IGN] projection sinusoïdaleRésumé : (Auteur) Recent studies show the sinusoidal projection to be a superior planar projection for representing global raster datasets. This study uses the sinusoidal projection as a basis for evaluating pixel loss and replication in eight other planar map projections. The percent of pixels represented accurately as a single pixel when projected from the sinusoidal to one of the other projections ranged from a low of about 58% for the Van der Grinten projection to a high of about 83% for the Mollweide projection. The graphic display of these losses and gains of pixels had revealing patterns, for example, large values of replication in the higher latitudes of cylindrical projections. [Termes IGN] World Geodetic System 1984Résumé : (Auteur) The WGS84 ellipsoid is tessellated using quadrilaterals of roughly the same size. This tiling is of general interest to global geographical information systems, but it has special relevance to global digital elevation models based on block averages. The simple relation between the tiling presented and the latitude/longitude reference system makes the tiling easy to implement, and the quadrilateral property of the cells offers regular subdivision like quadtrees. An error analysis gives a strict bound on the difference between cell averages calculated in plane and ellipsoidal coordinates. The mathematical results from this investigation are general and can be applied in error analysis related to other types of quadrilateral meshes. The grid can be easily subdivided into quadtree blocks. The error estimate makes it possible to combine the quadtree structure with standard two-dimensional wavelet representations.
