The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is derived using atmospherically corrected surface reflectance values, which is subsequently used to estimate the percent Q vegetation cover. Surface emissivity is approximated by a linear interpolation between a minimum bare soil emissivity and a maximum vegetation value of emissivity. An application of the method to an image over the Southern Great Plains 1997 (SGP97) Hydrology Experiment for the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) band 4 demonstrates temperature corrections up to 8°C, with a mean correction at 3.7°C. The temperatures within the fully vegetated pixels show good agreement with air temperature measurements at the time of satellite overpass. [Termes IGN] variation d'échelleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we extend our previous work on shapebased queries to support queries on configurations of image objects. Here we consider spatial reasoning, especially directional and metric object relationships. Existing models for spatial reasoning tend to rely on pre-identified cardinal directions and minimal scale variations, assumptions that cannot be considered as given in our image applications, where orientations and scale may vary substantially, and are often unknown. Accordingly, we have developed the method of varying baselines to identify similarities in direction and distance relations. Our method allows us to evaluate directional similarities without a priori knowledge of cardinal directions, and to compare distance relations even when query scene and database content differ in scale by unknown amounts. We use our method to evaluate similarity between a userdefined query scene and object configurations. Here we present this new method, and discuss its role within a broader image retrieval framework. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents two approaches of textural classification on a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ERS-2 image, with the aim of the location of the flows of lava and of the serviced zones around the volcanic site of the Mountain Cameroon. The first approach is a method of progressive supervised classification, where a single class is extracted at the same moment, by using 7 parameters of texture stemming from the run length method. Three classes of texture were extracted by this method and the images from the three classes were merged by the red green blue coloured composition to produce the final map. For purposes of comparison, a not supervised classification was applied to the same image. The applied not supervised classification uses parameters of texture stemming from the co-occurrence matrix method, and it lays on the detection of the peaks of a histogram. The results obtained by the two methods are coherent, and the validation of the results was made by observations during a recent mission on the site of study.
