[Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) In the history of surveying and mapping, a Iarge volumes of topographic maps and digital elevation models have been created at various scales throughout the world. However, positional errors and geometric distortions may exist in the topographic contour maps and their derived DEMs due to inaccurate ground control and poor navigation techniques in the early years. In this paper, we present a new technique to detect and correct positional errors and geometric distortions in topographic data based on rigorous Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image simulation and mathematical modeling of SAR imaging geometry. Our method has been successfully applied to two USGS topographical data sets in Antarctica. Using Radarsat SAR imagery, positional errors of these two data sets have been reduced from 5 km to 200 m and from 200 m to 50 m, respectively. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) It is investigated whether a GIS-based distributed model developed for rockfall assessment at slope scale, which uses data with a support of 2.5 x 2.5 m, could be used for rockfall assessment at the regional scale, using input data with a support of 25 x 25 m and of poorer quality. It was anticipated that in the latter case the model error would increase. Three types of simulations were applied to the same model and the outcomes were validated with field data. The first simulation used input data with a support of 2.5 x 2.5 m and aggregated the output to a support of 25 x 25 m. The second simulation used the same input data as in the first simulation, but these data were aggregated to a support of 25 x 25 m before running the model. The third simulation used input data of poorer quality obtained at a support of 25 x 25 m. The results show that simulating the maximum extent of rockfall runout zones with a distributed model using data with a support of 25 x 25 m is realistic and feasible. This is also true for data with poorer quality as the third simulation resulted in a slightly larger mean-squared error than the first simulation. Surprisingly, it also gave a smaller error than the second simulation. We investigated the cause of the large error produced by the second simulation and concluded that this was mainly caused by the combination of a high-quality digital elevation model and the loss of spatial structure in the input data due to spatial aggregation. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Applications like land-cover mapping frequently require the transformation of vector polygons to raster grids, such that each cell in the output raster is assigned a single class. Cell value assignment is a direct function of the geometric relationship between the vector polygons and the origin, orientation and spatial resolution of the raster structure, acting in conjunction with the value assignment rule employed by the algorithm. Results of an alternative approach to characterizing origin assignment variability are reported. A simulation approach is employed to perturb the origin of the grid lattice by amounts smaller than the grid spacing. The distribution of results across all output raster realizations indicates the rasterization variability for a particular input vector map at a particular cell size. Results for a representative vector land-cover dataset are presented, indicating that substantial variability is possible. The paper concludes with a discussion of theoretical and practical implications for the identification of appropriate cell resolutions, as well as for identifying particular input shapes and polygon configurations that may be especially sensitive to rasterization error. [Termes IGN] transformation en cosinus discrèteRésumé : (Auteur) This is the first of two articles which will describe the JPEG2000 ISO standard and its use and benefits for GI applications. This article covers JPEG2000/part1 image compression which can be efficiently used for orthophotos. A wide range of techniques currently exist for the compression of images (grayscale or color). One of the most common techniques is the DCT-based "JPEG-standard" from the Joint Pictures Expert Group. Simply, JPEG takes 8x8 pixel blocks and compresses those using DCT. However, JPEG is over 15 years old and therefore JPEG2000 which is described here is the official successor.
