[Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) Optimal deconvolution (ODC) utilizes the footprint overlap in microwave observations to estimate the earth's brightness temperatures (TB ). This paper examines the accuracy of ODC estimated TB compared with a standard averaging technique. Because brightness temperatures cannot be independently verified, we constructed synthetic True TB for accuracy assessment. We assigned TB at a high spatial resolution (1 km) grid and computed the True TB by spatial averaging of the assigned TB to a lower resolution earth grid (25 km), selected to match the resolution of products generated from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSRE). We used the sensor antenna response function along with the 1km assigned TB to generate synthetic observations at AMSRE footprint locations. These synthetic observations were subsequently deconvolved in the ODC technique to estimate TB at the lower resolution earth grid. The ODC estimated TB and the simple grid cell averages of the synthetic observations were compared with the True TB allowing us to quantify the efficacy of each technique. In areas of high TB contrast (such as boundaries of water bodies), ODC performed significantly better than averaging. In other areas, ODC and averaging techniques produced similar results. A technique similar to ODC can be effective in delineating water bodies with significant clarity. That will allow microwave observations to be utilized near the shorelines, a trouble spot for the currently used averaging techniques.
Note de contenu : Chapitre 1. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Although underestimated in practice, the small/unrepresentative sample problem is likely to affect a large segment of real-world remotely sensed (RS) image mapping applications where ground truth knowledge is typically expensive, tedious, or difficult to gather. Starting from this realistic assumption, subjective (weak) but ample evidence of the relative effectiveness of existing unsupervised and supervised data labeling systems is collected in two RS image classification problems. To provide a fair assessment of competing techniques, first the two selected image datasets feature different degrees of image fragmentation and range from poorly to ill-posed. Second, different initialization strategies are tested to pass on to the mapping system at band the maximally informative representation of prior (ground truth) knowledge. For estimating and comparing the competing systems in terms of learning ability, generalization capability, and computational efficiency when little prior knowledge is available, the recently published data-driven map quality assessment (DAMA) strategy, which is capable of capturing genuine, but small, image details in multiple reference cluster maps, is adopted in combination with a traditional resubstitution method. Collected quantitative results yield conclusions about the potential utility of the alternative techniques that appear to be realistic and useful in practice, in line with theoretical expectations and the qualitative assessment of mapping results by expert photointerpreters. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) The z-test based on the Kappa statistic is commonly used to infer superiority of one map production method over another. Typically the same reference data set is used to calculate and next compare the Kappa's of the two maps. This data structure easily leads to dependence between the two error-matrices. This may result in overly large variance estimates and too conservative inference about the difference in accuracy between the two methods. Tests considering the dependency between the error matrices would be more sensitive in such case. In this article we compare the performance of two such tests, a randomization and McNemar's test, with the traditional z-test. We compared 16 alternative methods to classify salt marsh vegetation in The Netherlands. The error matrices were positively associated in all 120 possible comparisons of pairs of classification methods. This suggests that dependency between pairs of error matrices used in classifier comparison is a common phenomenon. Both the randomization and McNemar test gave lower p values and rejecied the null hypothesis of equal performance more frequently than the z-test. We therefore recommend considering their use. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'imageRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a quantitative comparison of several multi-view stereo reconstruction algorithms. Until now, the lack of suitable calibrated multi-view image datasets with known ground truth (3D shape models) has prevented such direct comparisons. In this paper, we first survey multi-view stereo algorithms and compare them qualitatively using a taxonomy that differentiates their key properties. We then describe our process for acquiring and calibrating multiview image datasets with high-accuracy ground truth and introduce our evaluation methodology. Finally, we present the results of our quantitative comparison of state-of-the-art multi-view stereo reconstruction algorithms on six benchmark datasets.
