[Termes IGN] précision altimétriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The TanDEM-X satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mission, which is the result of the partnership between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Astrium GmbH, has the goal to deliver a high-precision global digital elevation model (DEM). The X-band SAR interferometry-derived DEMs contain absolute and relative height errors that have to be minimized with the help of height references in order to achieve the specified accuracies. ICESat laser altimetry data are suited for this task, due to their accuracy and global distribution. In order to gain experience in the comparison between a radar-derived DEM and ICESat GLA14 elevation data, an X-band DEM was acquired over a test region with the experimental airborne radar system of DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen. Additionally, a laser DEM of the area was used to verify the height accuracy claimed by previously published ICESat studies over different terrain types and after applying different selection threshold criteria. The analyses described in this paper are the basis for the definition of a suitable global ICESat selection strategy and include the computation of the density of selected ICESat samples over the Earth. These aspects are crucial for a successful TanDEM-X DEM generation. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Photorealistic visualization combines 3-D geometric models with their texture images to render the virtual world. This paper points out that the texture images should be radiometrically corrected to achieve a true realistic appearance. Such a correction should include not only the color adjustment among images of the same object, but also the shade variation caused by the illumination change. The objective of this study is to correct the input texture images such that their shade varies when being rendered under different illumination directions. To achieve this goal we first apply the specular-to-diffuse mechanism based on the dichromatic reflection model to remove the specular component from the texture image. The resultant diffusion-only image then undergoes a shade correction to produce a normalized shade-free texture image. In the final step, shades under any illumination are produced to achieve a true photorealistic effect. Presented in the paper are the principles and methods for such corrections, along with a performance evaluation based on the graphic and numerical results for roof texture images. [Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the positional accuracy of the declassified KH-9 Hexagon imagery and derived DEM. Aimed at geodesy and mapmaking, the KH-9 program (1973 to 1980) resulted in an image archive with worldwide stereo coverage at 6 to 9 m. We used six KH-9 images acquired in 1980 over two testfields in Central Asia. Using reseau marks on the scanned KH-9 frames, we found and corrected image distortions. In bundle orientation with Ground Control Points (GCPs) from QuickBird images, we achieved horizontal accuracies below 6 m for a flat terrain testfield and approximately 10 m for a mountainous terrain testfield. With three GCPs the image orientation horizontal accuracy degraded by only 20 percent. We generated a DEM from the KH-9 images and estimated its vertical accuracy using IceSAT laser altimetry data and an additional DEM from 1:25 000 topographic maps. The DEM RMSE was 6.18 m over flat terrain and 20.0 m over mountainous terrain. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Roadway signs are important for safety, and transportation agencies need to identify sign condition changes to perform timely maintenance, including replacement. Currently, sign condition changes are inspected manually in the field, which is time consuming, costly, and some--times dangerous. This paper first proposes a novel algorithm to detect three condition changes: missing, tilted, and blocked signs, using GPS data and video log images. The algorithm consists of three steps: (a) Multi-Scale Sign Image Matching (m-sim), (b) Image feature analysis, and (c) Sign condition change detection and classification. The algorithm was tested using images with simulated sign condition changes and actual video images taken in Fiscal Year (fy) 2003 and 2005 by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (ladotd). The tests demonstrate the algorithm is effective to detect three types of sign condition changes. Out of 34,000 actual video log images, the algorithm detected and classified 100 percent of the missing signs, 72.7 percent of the tilted signs, and 66.7 percent of the blocked signs, for an overall 74.3 percent detection rate. These results show that the algorithm is useful for developing an intelligent roadway sign condition change detection system. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a semi-automated method for shoreline extraction from RADARSAT-2 intensity imagery. First, a preprocessing is applied to enhance the contrast of the SAR image. Second, thresholding combined with morphological filtering is employed to segment the SAR image into the land and the sea. Third, narrow band level set segmentation is implemented to refine the segmentation result. In the last step, morphological filters are utilized to eliminate any remaining spurious segments. Boundaries between the land and the sea are delineated into shorelines based on the segmentation result. Experiment on RADARSAT-2 intensity images demonstrates that the proposed method is promising.
