[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The three-dimensional photogrammetric analysis of image sequences is a growing field of application. For the analysis of dynamic processes one important precondition has to be guaranteed: All cameras have to be synchronized, otherwise the results are affected by asynchronism. In this article a new method is presented, which can determine the asynchronism of an arbitrary number of image sequences. In contrast to already existing methods, in the new approach the asynchronism is modeled in object space and then converted into an interpolation function containing a set of unknowns for each camera. In this form the asynchronism is introduced into an extended bundle adjustment, in which the unknowns are solved simultaneously with the image orientation parameters and the object coordinates of tie points. Therefore, the approach has no restrictions with regard to the number and the set-up of the cameras in the acquisition network. Furthermore, both the temporal and spatial analysis step are carried out simultaneously. We have implemented the suggested method and have run a number of experiments in the context of vehicle impact testing. First, sequences with a frame rate of 1,000 Hz observing an object with a speed of up to 7 m/s and an asynchronism of 0.8 ms were analyzed. The accuracy of the object point determination could be improved by a factor of 10. Then, five sequences of a vehicle impact test with a speed of 15.6 m/s were investigated. Here, errors in the object coordinates of up to 30 mm could be eliminated using the new approach. Given the small tolerances in car development, this improvement in point accuracy is significant. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose the use of Geometric Activity (GA) features for detecting man-made objects in urban areas using VHR satellite imagery. These features describe the geometric context of a pixel without the necessity of segmentation and can be integrated as extra bands in a per-pixel classification. Two main types of GA features were investigated: ridge features based on the well-known facet model and morphological features obtained by applying closing transforms with structuring elements of different size and shape. Our findings show a substantial increase in classification accuracy for the man-made object classes “roads and buildings with dark roof” after inclusion of GA features. Next to GA features, the use of object-based features derived from eCognition®, containing both geometric and textural information, was also investigated for per-pixel classification. Accuracies obtained with object-based features are comparable to the accuracies obtained with GA features. The inclusion of both GA features and object-based features further improves the overall accuracy. GA features and object-based features thus contain complementary information. First, we show that the 3D camera or scene velocity can be retrieved from image derivatives only assuming that the scene contains a dominant plane. Second, we propose a new robust algorithm that simultaneously provides the Least Trimmed Square solution and the percentage of inliers—the non-contaminated data. Experiments on both synthetic and real image sequences demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed method. Those experiments show that the new robust approach can outperform classical robust schemes. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) LandScan USA is a 90 m population distribution model that is used for a variety of applications, including emergency management. Models should have a measure of accuracy; however, the accuracy of population distribution models is difficult to determine due to the inclusion of multiple input datasets and the lack of quantifiable, observable (validated) data to confirm model output. Validated data enables quantification of: (1) overall model accuracy and (2) changes in model output at different levels of quality control. This article examines the effect of quality control for two national school datasets incorporated as input in LandScan USA for Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; which had a local, validated school dataset available. The effect of each stage of quality control efforts utilized throughout the LandScan USA process were assessed to determine what level of quality control was required to have a statistically significant change of the model's population distribution. The typical level of quality control for LandScan USA resulted in 36% of schools being moved to the correct location and 20% of missing student enrollments were found, compared to 87% and 98% respectively for the validated dataset. The costs of increasing quality control resulted in a six-fold increase in labor time; however, the additional quality control did not produce statistically significant improvements in the LandScan USA model. Thus, typical quality control efforts for schools in LandScan USA produced a population distribution similar to the validated level of quality control, and can be applied with confidence for policy, planning, and emergency situations. [Termes IGN] teinteRésumé : (Auteur) Recently, Tsai presented an efficient algorithm which uses the ratio value of the hue over the intensity to construct the ratio map for detecting shadows of color aerial images. Instead of only using the global thresholding process in Tsai's algorithm, this paper presents a novel successive thresholding scheme (STS) to detect shadows more accurately. In our proposed STS, the modified ratio map, which is obtained by applying the exponential function to the ratio map proposed by Tsai, is presented to stretch the gap between the ratio values of shadow and nonshadow pixels. By performing the global thresholding process on the modified ratio map, a coarse-shadow map is constructed to classify the input color aerial image into the candidate shadow pixels and the nonshadow pixels. In order to detect the true shadow pixels from the candidate shadow pixels, the connected component process is first applied to the candidate shadow pixels for grouping the candidate shadow regions. For each candidate shadow region, the local thresholding process is performed iteratively to extract the true shadow pixels from the candidate shadow region. Finally, for the remaining candidate shadow regions, a fine-shadow determination process is applied to identify whether each remaining candidate shadow pixel is the true shadow pixel or not. Under six testing images, experimental results show that, for the first three testing images, both Tsai's and our proposed algorithms have better detection performance than that of the algorithm of Huang , and the shadow detection accuracy of our proposed STS-based algorithm is comparable to Tsai's algorithm. For the other three testing images, which contain some low brightness objects, our proposed algorithm has better shadow detection accuracy when compared with the previous two shadow detection algorithms proposed by Huang and Tsai.
