The widely used average-error statistic Mean Square Error (MSE) was selected for measuring the DEM accuracy. The work was focused on DEM uncertainty assessment using approximate confidence intervals. Those confidence intervals were constructed both from classical methods which assume a normal distribution of the error and from a new method based on a non-parametric approach. The first two approaches studied, called Chi-squared and Asymptotic Student t, consider a normal distribution of the residuals. That is especially true in the first case. The second case, due to the asymptotic properties of the t distribution, can perform reasonably well with even slightly non-normal residuals if the sample size is large enough. The third approach developed in this article is a new method based on the theory of estimating functions which could be considered much more general than the previous two cases. It is based on a non-parametric approach where no particular distribution is assumed. Thus, we can avoid the strong assumption of distribution normality accepted in previous work and in the majority of current standards of positional accuracy. The three approaches were tested using Monte Carlo simulation for several populations of residuals generated from originally sampled data. Those original grid DEMs, considered as ground data, were collected by means of digital photogrammetric methods from seven areas displaying differing morphology employing a 2 by 2 m sampling interval. The original grid DEMs were subsampled to generate new lower-resolution DEMs. Each of these new DEMs was then interpolated to retrieve its original resolution using two different procedures. Height differences between original and interpolated grid DEMs were calculated to obtain residual populations. One interpolation procedure resulted in slightly non-normal residual populations, whereas the other produced very non-normal residuals with frequent outliers. Monte Carlo simulations allow us to report that the estimating function approach was the most robust and general of those tested. In fact, the other two approaches, especially the Chi-squared method, were clearly affected by the degree of normality of the residual population distribution, producing less reliable results than the estimating functions approach. This last method shows good results when applied to the different datasets, even in the case of more leptokurtic populations. In the worst cases, no more than 64-128 checkpoints were required to construct an estimate of the global error of the DEM with 95% confidence. The approach therefore is an important step towards saving time and money in the evaluation of DEM accuracy using a single average-error statistic. Nevertheless, we must take into account that MSE is essentially a single global measure of deviations, and thus incapable of characterizing the spatial variations of errors over the interpolated surface. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (Auteur) We have utilized satellite altimetry data to generate the very high-resolution gravity anomaly maps to infer subsurface geological structures in the area of the devastating earthquake (and the corresponding tsunami) that struck the Indian Ocean near Sumatra (Indonesia) on 26 December 2004. In the present study, a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) gravity image has been generated over a part of the eastern Indian offshore encompassing the Sumatran earthquake region apart from Ninety East Ridge, Andaman subduction zone, etc. Four latitudinal (2°, 3°, 4° and 8.6° N) gravity profiles have been generated across the epicentre (3° N/M w 9.0)/aftershock regions (4° N/M w 5.8 and 8.6° N/M w 6.0 and 6.6). A drastic change of gravity anomaly patterns (sim130 mGal) near the epicentre and the aftershock regions could be observed, which are however slowly diminishing further away from the epicentre. This gravitational difference might have been caused by the differences in plate tectonic processes. Minor/major gravitational differences in other areas may be due to the changes in densities of different lithospheric zones/sedimentary layers. Hence, our study further supports the idea that negative gravity and topography anomalies can be used as a predictor for occurrences of large earthquakes in subduction zones. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (Auteur) The Sumatra earthquake struck South Asia on 26 December 2004 and triggered monstrous waves that turned into a tsunami hitting the ocean regions and caused the most severe natural disaster of recent decades. The devastating earthquake and tsunami changed the landscape of coastal areas in many countries around the whole Indian Ocean region. To provide real-time information for rescue and rehabilitation plans, satellite images were applied to monitor and evaluate the damage over several devastated spots. The FORMOSAT-2 satellite, which was launched on 21 May 2004 and operated by the National Space Organization, Taiwan, is uniquely designed to take timely and low-cost black and white images daily with a resolution of 2 m and colour images of 8-m resolution. FORMOSAT-2 is expected to have many useful applications, such as natural-disaster evaluation, land-usage analysis, environmental monitoring, and coastal search and rescue. FORMOSAT-2 successfully acquired several post-tsunami images of the hazardous areas, both Puhket, Thailand and Banda Aceh, Indonesia on 28 December. A series of FORMOSAT-2 satellite images were processed by geometric and radiometric correction, haze reduction, image enhancement, feature extraction, image classification, and image fusion to assess the damage over those devastated areas. FORMOSAT-2 satellite images with a high-temporal resolution and high-spatial resolution were proved to be an efficient and useful information source for decision-makers to make rescue and recovery plans, especially for some isolated islands hard to reach in time. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) The calculation of visibility patterns associated with past monuments and sites is an important element in modern landscape archaeology. These types of investigations have been limited by the inability of current viewshed routines to incorporate vegetation information. The following paper presents a new viewshed algorithm aimed at calculating the probability of locations being visible in the presence of vegetation. To this day, little work has been done to address this limitation, a notable exception is Dean's Permeability Index Model (1997). A review of Dean's model is provided here in the light of the new proposed algorithm. The new algorithm is based on mathematical principles found in Beer-Lambert's Attenuation Law, a physics law governing the attenuation of light through a medium. In addition to common viewshed parameters, the routine requires a 3D model of a tree/plant and a layer indicating the spatial distribution and density of vegetation on the landscape. The possibility of varying both, the spatial and density distribution of tree/plants, and the three-dimensional model representing vegetation makes the model well suited to investigate the impact that vegetation may have on visibility patterns.
