The first approach is carried out in the v-disparity space and is based on a voting scheme, the Hough transform. The second one consists in computing the best fitting plane for the whole 3D road data points, directly in the Euclidean space, by using least squares fitting. The comparative study is initially performed over a set of different synthetic surfaces (e.g., plane, quadratic surface, cubic surface) digitized by a virtual stereo head; then real data obtained with a commercial stereo head are used. The comparative study is intended to be used as a criterion for fining the best technique according to the road geometry. Additionally, it highlights common problems driven from a wrong assumption about the scene’s prior knowledge. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) In this work, a theoretical-empirical model has been developed for the modelling of the local geometric accuracy of digital orthoimages from panchromatic QuickBird Very High Resolution Satellite Imagery (VHRSI). The empirical component integrates the error of sensor orientation and its propagation to the orthoimage generation process. The theoretical component, mainly a geometrical study from QuickBird Image Metadata File, seeks to model the propagation of DEM error throughout the orthorectificacion process in addition to the previous errors of the bundle adjustment. For the goal of model developing and calibration, a panchromatic QuickBird Basic Imagery was acquired on 19 December 2004, registering a mean collected GSD of 0.62 m, off-nadir view angle of 8.4° and an azimuth and elevation angle of the satellite with respect to the centre of the image of 123.3 and 80.9° respectively. The QuickBird image employed covered an area of 17 x 18 Km over the district of Nijar, located at the North-East of Almeria city, Spain. It was centred on the UTM coordinates European Datum ED50 (easting and northing) of 577,848 and 4,087,277 m. The Toutin's 3D physical model was the selected method to compute the bundle adjustment and so to carry out the sensor orientation using PCI Geomatica OrthoEngine software v. 9.1.7. On this score, 3D coordinates of 124 ground points were measured by means of high precision differential GPS techniques. From the whole set of ground points, a sub-set of 45 ones uniformly distributed was selected for the sensor orientation (GCPs), whereas the remaining 79 were used as independent checkpoints (ICPs) to assess the performance of the developed model regarding to the average error of the final orthoimages. In as much to the results, the empirical component, which takes into account the effect of pointing error and number and accuracy of GCPs on sensor orientation, presented an acceptable fitting to the experimental data, with a regression coefficient R2 = 0.932. The theoretical component also offered good results, observing like the proposed model reproduces with reasonable accuracy the statistical behaviour of the 2D orthoimage errors measured at the 79 ground points checked. The findings obtained in this work could be used as a guide for the selection of appropriate operational parameters in projects related to digital cartography production and updating from QuickBird imagery. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of the present paper is to develop a new method for delineating lakes and enclosed islands from shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM). The Thousand-Island Lake in China is chosen as the study site. DEM may have missing values or be inaccurate over water bodies. Thus, it is not trivial to delineate the shorelines of lake directly from DEM. We achieve this objective by overlaying the boundary derived from the Landsat image of the same area. Unlike traditional water body delineation techniques, e.g. the band ratio method, which make use of physical quantities, we only use the colour information from Landsat ETM+ band 7, 4 and 2. The main reason is that the colour information is the only resource available for most publicly available satellite data such as the maps from Google Earth. Thus, it is necessary to develop a method depending on only colour information. In the Landsat image, a discrimination function to determine whether a pixel belongs to the lake area is obtained by studying sample pixels chosen from the lake area. The delineation of shorelines is an evolutionary process. The evolution equation is derived according to the active contour model and the discrimination function. The initial contour is inside the lake and expands according to the evolution equation. The evolving curve converges to the boundaries of the lake efficiently with a satisfactory result. Finally, the shorelines are overlaid on the DEM according to latitude and longitude. Our geodesic active contour method is a general one, and could be used to delineate objects of interest such as oil slicks and burn scars in satellite images. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) The wavelet-based scheme for the fusion of multispectral (MS) and panchromatic (PAN) imagery has become quite popular due to its ability to preserve the spectral fidelity of the MS imagery while improving its spatial quality. This is important if the resultant imagery is used for automatic classification. Wavelet-based fusion results depend on the number of decomposition levels applied in the wavelet transform. Too few decomposition levels result in poor spatial quality fused images. On the other hand, too many levels reduce the spectral similarity between the original MS and the pan-sharpened images. If the shift-invariant wavelet transform is applied, each excessive decomposition level results in a large computational penalty. Thus, the choice of the number of decomposition levels is significant. In this paper, PAN and MS image pairs with different resolution ratios were fused using the shift-invariant wavelet transform, and the optimal decomposition levels were determined for each resolution ratio. In general, it can be said that the fusion of images with larger resolution ratios requires a higher number of decomposition levels. This paper provides the practitioner an understanding of the tradeoffs associated with the computational demand and the spatial and spectral quality of the wavelet-based fusion algorithm as a function of the number of decomposition levels. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the feasibility of integrating GPS and remote sensing data into a GIS database through rectification of satellite images of both urban and rural areas using uncorrected GPS coordinates. A GPS receiver was used to log the coordinates of 25 ground control points (GCPs) in a rural area and 20 GCPs in an urban area. Their coordinates were also read from topographic maps. Both sets of coordinates were used to rectify Landsat TM, and SPOT panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (XL) images. It is found that none of the GPS coordinates are able to achieve an acceptable accuracy level of integration unless some inaccurate GCPs are excluded. The percentage of useable GCPs varies from less than 50 to nearly 90, depending on the spatial resolution of the image and the ease of GCP identification. On average, the difficulty in identifying GCPs on the ground and the image degrades integration accuracy by up to one pixel.
