[Termes IGN] Short Waves InfraRedRésumé : (auteur) Compared with optical sensors, the all-weather and day-and-night imaging ability of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) makes it competitive for burnt area mapping. This study investigates the potential of Sentinel-1 C-band SAR sensors in burnt area mapping with an implicit Radar Convolutional Burn Index (RCBI). Based on multitemporal Sentinel-1 SAR data, a convolutional networks-based classification framework is proposed to learn the RCBI for highlighting the burnt areas. We explore the mapping accuracy level that can be achieved using SAR intensity and phase information for both VV and VH polarizations. Moreover, we investigate the decorrelation of Interferometric SAR (InSAR) coherence to wildfire events using different temporal baselines. The experimental results on two recent fire events, Thomas Fire (Dec., 2017) and Carr Fire (July, 2018) in California, demonstrate that the learnt RCBI has a better potential than the classical log-ratio operator in highlighting burnt areas. By exploiting both VV and VH information, the developed RCBI achieved an overall mapping accuracy of 94.68% and 94.17% on the Thomas Fire and Carr Fire, respectively. [Termes IGN] prise en compte du contexteRésumé : (Auteur) Different forms of phase noise in SAR interferograms hamper the accuracy and reliability of interferometric results (InSAR and DInSAR) for the reconstruction of altimetric information and its variations. Geometric and temporal decorrelations, changes in the properties of observed surfaces and delays introduced by the atmospheric layers are the main sources of interferometric noise. In order to reduce their effects and thus increase the robustness of the phase unwrapping algorithms, filtering methods are applied at different levels of the InSAR and DInSAR processes. In this article, we propose an interferometric filtering process that combines wavelet decomposition into subbands and nonlinear weighting filter called spectral contextual filter (SCF). SCF is based on the Goldstein algorithm, whose nonlinear filter coefficients are calculated, for each element of window according to the filter's punctual parameter. This parameter is determined by estimating the adaptive coherent pseudocorrelation of overlapping blocks of the interferometric phase which combines coherence and pseudocorrelation that are both weighted by the coefficient of variation of each block. In order to show the efficiency and robustness of this process, we compared it with the subspaces decomposition filtering process that we implemented. An assessment scheme was led on the basis of a compromise between residues reduction and fringe boundaries conservation. This assessment was carried relative to the global and local parameters. The tests were conducted on complex interferograms acquired on regions with high topographical variations. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) To correctly interpret the estimated displacements in InSAR point clouds, especially in the built environment, these need to be linked to real-world structures. This requires the accurate and precise 3D positioning of each point. Artificial ground control points (GCPs), such as corner reflectors, serve this purpose, but since they require efforts and resources, there is a need for criteria to assess their usefulness. Here we evaluate the value and necessity of using GCPs for different scenarios, concerning the required efforts, and compare this to alternatives such as digital surface models (DSM) and advanced (geo) physical corrections. We consider single-epoch as well as multi-epoch GCP deployment, reflect on the number of GCPs required in relation to the number of SAR data acquisitions, and compare this with digital surface models of different quality levels. Analyzing the geolocation performance using TerraSAR-X and Sentinel-1 data, we evaluate the pros and cons of various deployment options and show that the multi-epoch deployment of a GCP yields optimal geolocalization results in terms of precision, accuracy, and reliability. [Termes IGN] vagueRésumé : (auteur) Although basic understanding of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging mechanism of ocean waves has been achieved, challenges still remain. In this paper, a large number of quad-polarized SAR images are analyzed to help assess how the standard SAR imaging transformation applies to all polarization channels. Foremost, the azimuth cutoff, a parameter essentially governed by the detected wave motions, is today solely related to radar configuration and the ocean wave spectrum but not to the polarization configuration. As obtained, the analyses based on quad-polarized Radarsat-2 and Gaofen-3 products document the distinct dependence of azimuth cutoff on polarization and incidence angle. Especially for cross-polarized VH measurements, azimuth cutoff estimates are generally larger than copolarized HH ones, the latter already being larger than values estimated under VV configuration. This trend increases with the incidence angle. The systematic comparisons between SAR measurements and simulations further demonstrate that the present SAR nonlinear transformation may not properly take into account the differing coherence time associated with the multi-polarized observation of ocean scenes. In particular, to reproduce the large azimuth cutoff parameters of cross-polarized images, a reduced coherence time shall be expected. This measurable sensitivity shall enhance the capabilities of polarized SAR systems to precisely derive more ocean surface properties, especially the influence of wave breakers, by combining both the copolarization and cross-polarization measurements. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) The resolution achieved by current synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors provides a detailed visualization of urban areas. Spaceborne sensors such as TerraSAR-X can be used to analyze large areas at a very high resolution. In addition, repeated passes of the satellite give access to temporal and interferometric information on the scene. Because of the complex 3-D structure of urban surfaces, scatterers located at different heights (ground, building facade, and roof) produce radar echoes that often get mixed within the same radar cells. These echoes must be numerically unmixed in order to get a fine understanding of the radar images. This unmixing is at the core of SAR tomography. SAR tomography reconstruction is generally performed in two steps: 1) reconstruction of the so-called tomogram by vertical focusing, at each radar resolution cell, to extract the complex amplitudes (a 1-D processing) and 2) transformation from radar geometry to ground geometry and extraction of significant scatterers. We propose to perform the tomographic inversion directly in ground geometry in order to enforce spatial regularity in 3-D space. This inversion requires solving a large-scale nonconvex optimization problem. We describe an iterative method based on variable splitting and the augmented Lagrangian technique. Spatial regularizations can easily be included in this generic scheme. We illustrate, on simulated data and a TerraSAR-X tomographic data set, the potential of this approach to produce 3-D reconstructions of urban surfaces.
