[Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) A new unsupervised classification approach for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) data is proposed in this paper. The Wishart-Chernoff distance is calculated and used in an agglomerative hierarchical clustering approach. Initial segmentation of POLSAR data into clusters is obtained based on the total backscattering power (SPAN) combined with the entropy, alpha angle, and anisotropy. The complex Wishart clustering is performed to optimize the initialization. Optimized clusters with minimum Wishart-Chernoff distance are merged hierarchically into an appropriate number of classes. The appropriate number of classes is estimated based on the data log-likelihood algorithm. Classification results show that the use of Wishart-Chernoff distance is superior to that of the Wishart test statistic distance. The effectiveness of the proposed Wishart-Chernoff distance is demonstrated using Advanced Land Observing Satellite POLSAR data. [Termes IGN] polarisationRésumé : (Auteur) Polarimetric radar provides useful information on scattering mechanisms, and advances in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) technology have shown the effect of polarization information on various applications. The disadvantage of POLSAR is low azimuth resolution capability. Since the effective pulse repetition frequency (PRF) in each polarimetric channel of POLSAR is half the total PRF, the resolution is twice as low as the single-polarization SAR. This drawback may be mitigated by employing a superresolution method designed for polarimetric radar such as polarimetric bandwidth extrapolation (PBWE), previously proposed by the authors. Thus far, the authors only empirically showed that polarization information helps in improving resolution via numerical simulations. In this paper, theoretical analysis on the resolution of a polarimetric radar is provided. Along with the resolution, estimation accuracy of the polarization property of the target is studied. In the analysis, we employ the recently proposed metric called the statistical resolution limit (SRL) that provides the highest resolution achievable by any unbiased parametric spectral estimator. The SRL of polarimetric radar is derived and compared with that of single-polarization radar. The Crame?r-Rao bound (CRB) of the polarization estimation error of the polarimetric radar is also derived. The complexified full Fisher information matrix and the CRBs of signal parameters are derived first for the general multichannel signal in nonwhite Gaussian noise. Then, the SRL and the polarization estimation error are derived using the CRBs of signal parameters for the cases where two point targets are closely located. It is shown analytically and numerically that the polarization information helps in improving the SRL. It is also shown that the polarimetric processing significantly improves the accuracy of the polarization estimation when two targets are located closer than the Fourier resolution cell- Finally, the performance of the PBWE is evaluated via simulations and is compared to the SRL and the CRB for the polarization estimation. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) We present a mathematical formulation for the phase due to the errors in digital elevation models (DEMs) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) time series obtained by the small baseline (SB) or the small baseline subset method. We show that the effect of the DEM error in the estimated displacement is proportional to the perpendicular baseline history of the set of SAR acquisitions. This effect at a given epoch is proportional to the perpendicular baseline between the SAR acquisition at that epoch and the reference acquisition. Therefore, the DEM error can significantly affect the time-series results even if SB interferograms are used. We propose a new method for DEM error correction of InSAR time series, which operates in the time domain after inversion of the network of interferograms for the displacement time series. This is in contrast to the method of Berardino (2002) in which the DEM error is estimated in the interferogram domain. We show the effectiveness of this method using simulated InSAR data. We apply the new method to Fernandina volcano in the Galapagos Islands and show that the proposed DEM error correction improves the estimated displacement significantly. [Termes IGN] vecteur propreRésumé : (Auteur) This paper mainly focuses on the advantages of subspace-based eigenvector (EV) spectral estimator to improve the power spectrum and the quality of calculations in spectrum parameter estimation. In general, the spectrum produced by most of subspace methods is sharply peaked at the frequency of complex sinusoids. Although subspace methods exhibit the advantage of spectral resolution, the retrieval of the actual spectrum width is not well observed in many cases, compared with standard Fourier estimates. Several simulation works are carried out to determine the unknown order of the signal correlation matrix, which significantly helps in obtaining the equivalent Fourier spectrum using EV along with numerous advantages of the subspace method for better estimation of spectrum parameters. Such advantages are useful in precisely obtaining the atmospheric moments (Doppler frequency, spectrum width, etc.) from the synthesized beams required for wind estimation by the postset beam steering technique. In addition, the systematic improvements done in EV are much useful for complete wind profiling up to ~ 20 km with a temporal resolution of ~ 26 s, which is reported for the first time. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents fully polarimetric bistatic radar scattering measurements on groups of dielectric vertical and/or tilted square cross-sectional cylinders above a conductive circular plate in the frequency range of 6-18 GHz. The experiments have been conducted in the BABI facility at the French Aerospace Lab (ONERA). The imaging experiments consider an azimuthal bistatic radar configuration with a single incident direction and many scattering directions, in the way that the receiver positions synthesize a 1-D circular aperture in a horizontal plane around the focal point of the anechoic chamber. The bistatic scattering by the different sets of cylinders is also achieved through numerical simulations by using a volume-electric-field-integral-equation model employing a method of moments. First, theoretical and experimental bistatic radar-cross-section values are confronted. The comparisons show a good agreement for all polarization cases (vv, hv, vh, and hh). Then, a near-field reconstruction algorithm has been extended from a monostatic to our bistatic radar configuration in order to generate the reflectivity maps by focusing both theoretical and experimental scattered fields. The comparisons of the 2-D bistatic synthetic aperture radar images show that the two prediction techniques are accurate.
