[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric water vapour is a major limitation for high precision Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) applications due to its significant impact on microwave signals. We propose a statistical criterion to test whether an independent water vapour product can reduce water vapour effects on InSAR interferograms, and assess the potential of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) near-infrared water vapour products for correcting Advanced SAR (ASAR) data. Spatio-temporal comparisons show c- 1.1 mm agreement between MERIS and GPS/radiosonde water vapour products in terms, of standard deviations. One major limitation with the use of MERIS water vapour products is the frequency of cloud free conditions. Our analysis indicate, that in spite of the low global cloud free conditions (~251%), the frequency can be much higher for certain areas such as Eastern Tibet (~38%) and southern California (~48%). This suggests that MERIS water vapour products show potential for correcting ASAR interferometric measurements in certain regions. Note de contenu : 1 PRINCIPE DU RADAR SAR POLARIMETRIQUE

[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The first aim of this paper is to show how the joint use of Digital Surface Models (Dsms) coming from different sources may improve the understanding of an urban environment. More specifically, we consider laser and radar three-dimensional data over the same urban area and show that they can be profitably combined to improve building extraction. We exploit the better vertical and horizontal accuracy of the laser DSM, assumed to be available only for a small area, to ease the deformation of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (INSAR) DSM with built structures. To achieve this, we propose a method based on subsequent steps of geometrical correction, and mainly on a simple "stretching step" that uses laser data as a reference to adjust INSAR-derived building footprints. We show quantitative results obtained from two different urban areas, using different laser and radar data sets, to assess advantages and drawbacks of the proposed method. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) has resulted in the construction of the first publicly available near-global high resolution digital elevation model (DEM). The utility of this DEM, as for any geospatial data set, is a function of its quality. This paper is concerned with the assessment of SRTM accuracy and its relationship to land cover. Two methods-one raster-based and one point-based-are compared to match "finished" three-arc-second SRTM data to high precision, high accuracy surveyed elevations, as well as a corresponding DEM from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED). Differences between the two methodologies were not found to be significant. Error for the study site is substantially less than the mission objective, but substantially more than that for the NED. Significant overestimation of actual elevations pervades the SRTM DEM, and the overestimation is significantly higher in forested areas. This systematic error has implications both for applications employing SRTM data and for research on elevation data error modeling. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) From the recent availability of images recorded by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) airborne systems, automatic results of digital elevation models (DEMs) on urban structures have been published lately. This paper deals with automatic extraction of three-dimensional (3-D) buildings from stereoscopic high-resolution images recorded by the SAR airborne RAMSES sensor from the French Aerospace Research Center (ONERA). On these images, roofs are not very textured whereas typical strong L-shaped echoes are visible. These returns generally result from dihedral corners between ground and structures. They provide a part of the building footprints and the ground altitude, but not the building heights. Thus, we present an adapted processing scheme in two steps. First is stereoscopic structure extraction from L-shaped echoes. Buildings are detected on each image using the Hough transform. Then they are recognized during a stereoscopic refinement stage based on a criterion optimization. Second, is height measurement. As most of previous extracted footprints indicate the ground altitude, building heights are found by monoscopic and stereoscopic measures. Between structures, ground altitudes are obtained by a dense matching process. Experiments are performed on images representing an industrial area. Results are compared with a ground truth. Advantages and limitations of the method are brought out.
