[Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission distinguished itself as the first near-global spaceborne mission to demonstrate direct sensitivity to vertical vegetation structure. Whether this sensitivity is viewed as exploitable signal or unwanted bias, a great deal of interest exists in retrieving vegetation canopy height information from the SRTM data. This study presents a comprehensive application-specific assessment of SRTM data quality, focusing on the characterization and mitigation of two primary sources of relative vertical error: uncompensated Shuttle mast motion and random phase noise. The assessment spans four test sites located in the upper Midwestern United States and examines the dependence of data quality on both frequency, i.e., C-band vs. X-band, and the number of acquired datatakes. The results indicate that the quality of SRTM data may be higher than previously thought. Novel mitigation strategies include a knowledge-based approach to sample averaging, which has the potential to reduce phase noise error by 43 to 80%. The strategies presented here are being implemented as part of an ongoing effort to produce regional- to continental-scale estimates of vegetation canopy height within the conterminous U.S.

[Termes IGN] SendaïRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we offer an overview of the frequency characteristics on the polarization orientation angle shifts induced by Man-made structures. Nowadays, it is recognized that this parameter is closely related to the target azimuth slope. The algorithm to estimate the orientation angle shifts from polarimetric SAR data of urban area was suggested. By means of this algorithm, we compare longer wavelength L-band and shorter wavelength X-band polarimetric SAR measurements over the same area to understand what useful information can be derived from these measurements. In addition, we examine the similarities and differences of these datasets acquired with different frequency bands. The overview is demonstrated by JAXA L-band and NICT X-band Pi-SAR data over Sendai city, Japan. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) was flown in February 2000 to map the world's land mass with high accuracy, using two Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems. Spaceborne single-pass across-track SAR interferometry was used for the first time. The mechanical configuration of the interferometer formed both an across-track and a small along-track baseline between the antennas in the cargo bay of the space shuttle and at the tip of the deployable boom. SAR Along-Track Interferometry (ATI) is sensitive to ground motion and was recently proposed for traffic monitoring applications. Due to the along-track baseline, SRTM data currently offer the unique opportunity to study the effects of moving objects on high-resolution spaceborne SAR ATI data. This paper presents an analysis of moving vehicles in SRTM/X-SAR ATI data as well as application examples, and describes specific SAR processing techniques for vehicle detection and velocity measurement.
