[Termes IGN] préhistoireRésumé : (Auteur) A surprising discovery was made in 1995 in the Muszkowice Forest, south-western Poland, of a monumental cemetery with 6 earthen long barrows of the Funnel Beaker culture. Following an in-depth examination using traditional methods of archaeological survey, the cemetery was hailed as the only such funerary feature in that part of the country. However, subsequent large-area prospection performed using airborne laser scanning led to a startling discovery of further 15 monumental cemeteries with a total of 20 earthen long barrows. This article shows that even following a very fruitful examination conducted using surface survey, excavation and geomagnetic prospection, the employment of modern methods of non-invasive prospection may still deliver unexpected results that enhance our knowledge: they help discover unknown features and, by producing new data, extend the research perspectives, thus creating new possibilities for interpreting the cultural phenomena of the past. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Historical maps are vital tools for landscape reconstruction from the late medieval period onwards. However, the planimetric accuracy of local and regional maps before the nineteenth century is often considered problematic. This paper proposes a method for the evaluation of these maps, through integration in multiple computer programs such as ArcGIS, MapAnalyst and statistical software (SPSS). This method has been tested on a sample of historical maps depicting coastal landscape change in an area at the present-day Dutch-Belgian border (ranging from the local to the supra-regional level and from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries), and variations in planimetric accuracy over time have been interpreted. Results point to an exceptionally high accuracy of earlier medium- and large-scale maps – scale being the first determinant of planimetric accuracy – since no significant rise in accuracy over time was found. Notwithstanding this overall accuracy, many maps display pronounced local distortions. However, rather than disqualifying maps for landscape reconstruction, systematic analysis of these distortions can help to facilitate the interpretation of the historical maps and their use for landscape reconstruction. Finally, a method for integrating map accuracies in landscape reconstructions based on multiple maps is proposed and illustrated. [Termes IGN] site archéologiqueRésumé : (auteur) We analyse variations in prehistoric agricultural settlement behaviour both in space and time to detect main turning points and shifts in settlement patterns in Bohemia, western Czech Republic. We propose a theoretical framework to address our research question and a new evidence density estimation (EDE) method combining and extending existing approaches to produce probabilistic maps and temporal frequency distribution (TFD) curves. This method takes into account heterogeneous spatial and temporal accuracy of archaeological data, and it models settlement structure where respective sites have a specific area and a given interval of duration. We determined minimal sampling densities of archaeological data enabling the method to predict prehistoric settlement at a statistically significant level. The EDE method is universally applicable for all datasets with sampling densities of more than 0.05 archaeological actions per km2 for chrono-typologically dated evidence and 0.035 actions per km2 for radiocarbon or similar dates. The results show that changes in spatial extent, density and clustering of settlement activities occur repeatedly throughout the whole agricultural prehistory and shed new light on settlement behaviour of past populations.
