Employing a combination of low (not, vert, similar 2 km) and high (not, vert, similar 16 km) altitude images from the hyperspectral Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS), acquired between April 2002 and September 2003, and ground data collected from an automated tram system, several vegetation indices were calculated for Sky Oaks field station, a FLUXNET and SpecNet site located in northern San Diego County (CA, USA). Based on the relationships observed between the fluxes measured by the eddy covariance tower and the vegetation indices, net CO2 and water vapor flux maps were derived for the region around the flux tower. Despite differences in the scale of the images (from not, vert, similar 2 m to 16 m pixel size) as well as marked differences in environmental conditions (drought in 2002, recovery in early 2003, and fire in mid 2003), net CO2 and water flux modeled from AVIRIS-derived reflectance indices (NDVI, PRI and WBI) effectively tracked changes in tower fluxes across both drought and fire, and readily revealed spatial variation in fluxes within this landscape. After an initial period of net carbon uptake, drought and fire caused the ecosystem to lose carbon to the atmosphere during most of the study period. Our study shows the power of integrating optical and flux data in LUE models to better understand factors driving surface-atmosphere carbon and water vapor flux cycles, one of the main goals of SpecNet. [Termes IGN] Total ozone mapping spectrometerRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the results and satellite intercomparisons for the retrieval of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and land surface bidirectional reflectance using the Multiangle Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR). The algorithm developed is based on inversion of a physical model of light scattering that requires no a priori knowledge of the land surface. The model is evaluated for a number of sites around the world to test its operation over a range of aerosol types and land covers including dark and bright surfaces. Validation is performed using Aerosol Robotic Network ground-based sun-photometer measurements and by intercomparison with independent estimates of AOD derived from spaceborne instruments including Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aerosol products. Results show good agreement (Pearson's correlation coefficient r2=0.70 for all sites combined) between the AATSR-derived estimates of AOD and the sun-photometer measurements. There is also a high correlation (r2=0.84) between the AATSR- and MISR-derived AOD estimates, but the correlations of the AATSR-derived AOD with MODIS-derived AOD and TOMS aerosol index are lower. In addition, the ability of the sensor to discriminate between different aerosol types is evaluated. Moreover, the estimates of the aerosol properties are used for atmospheric correction of the top-of-atmosphere reflectance. The AATSR surface reflectances are compared with the MODIS bidirectional reflectance distribution function/Albedo and MISR surface products and are shown to correspond with root-mean-square errors of 0.03 and 0.06 or better, respectively. The retrieval method is applied on an image basis resulting in an image of surface reflectance and a separate map of AOD. A map of AOD at 550 nm covering the Sahel and southern Sahara region is presented to demonstrate operation at regional and potentially global scales. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the limitations of infrared remote sensing, sea surface temperature (SST) can be derived only under clear sky conditions from the infrared channels like those in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR), where as microwave radiometers can provide SST even under cloudy conditions. However, the accuracy of SST derived from the microwave sensor is less with a poor spatial resolution. In this study, SSTs over the Arabian Sea derived from NOAA-AVHRR and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-P4) multi-frequency scanning microwave radiometer (MSMR) observations have been compared on weekly basis with a view to blend these two observations, so that SST can be provided continuously even under cloudy conditions. The NOAA-AVHRR derived pathfinder SSTs with spatial resolution of 18 km were averaged to 1.5°*1.5° grid resolutions to match with MSMR observations. The analysis was carried out during 2000. Statistical analysis of the NOAA-AVHRR SST shows that the spatial variation of SST within 1.5° grid is negligible compared with the MSMR accuracy of 1.52°C. Thus the comparison of SST from these two sources with different spatial resolution is reasonable. The RMS difference is 1.55°C with a correlation coefficient of 0.73. After removing the seasonal bias, the RMS difference reduced to 0.66°C and the coefficient of correlation improved to 0.89. The correlation coefficient between the two observations has further improved to 0.90 and the RMS difference reduced to 0.53°C when the averaging was done using 5°*5° grid resolution. The accuracy of satellite derived SSTs are also evaluated with the moored buoy observations over the Arabian Sea. The accuracy of MSMR SST observations have improved if 95% confidence level data is considered. The results indicate the possibility of replacing the data gaps in AVHRR SSTs with MSMR estimations after adjusting for the seasonal biases. [Termes IGN] réflectance du solRésumé : (Auteur) The 16-day revisit cycle of Landsat has long limited its use for studying global biophysical processes, which evolve rapidly during the growing season. In cloudy areas of the Earth, the problem is compounded, and researchers are fortunate to get two to three clear images per year. At the same time, the coarse resolution of sensors such as the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) limits the sensors' ability to quantify biophysical processes in heterogeneous landscapes. In this paper, the authors present a new spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) algorithm to blend Landsat and MODIS surface reflectance. Using this approach, high-frequency temporal information from MODIS and high-resolution spatial information from Landsat can be blended for applications that require high resolution in both time and space. The MODIS daily 500-m surface reflectance and the 16-day repeat cycle Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) 30-m surface reflectance are used to produce a synthetic "daily" surface reflectance product at ETM+ spatial resolution. The authors present results both with simulated (model) data and actual Landsat/MODIS acquisitions. In general, the STARFM accurately predicts surface reflectance at an effective resolution close to that of the ETM+. However, the performance depends on the characteristic patch size of the landscape and degrades somewhat when used on extremely heterogeneous fine-grained landscapes. These data are useful for long-term studies of environmental change. However, temporal factors such as sensor degradation, variation in Sun–target–satellite geometry, and variable atmospheric conditions can create inconsistencies in multi-temporal images and complicate data analysis. This study investigated temporal influences on satellite data. The methodology was developed based on a theoretically derived relationship between pixel values of pseudo-invariant features (PIFs) across time. The relationship was validated using multi-temporal Landsat-5 TM images, which showed that temporal factors contribute to PIF pixel values in both multiplicative and additive ways. For Landsat-5 TM level-0 data, temporal influences were simulated in terms of multiplicative and additive components. The results showed that atmospheric variation is the most influential factor, followed by variation in the Sun–target–satellite geometry and TM sensor degradation.
