[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Alpine glaciers are strongly suffering the consequences of the temperature rising and monitoring them over long periods is of particular interest for climate change tracking. A wide range of techniques can be successfully applied to survey and monitor glaciers with different spatial and temporal resolutions. However, going back in time to retrace the evolution of a glacier is still a challenging task. Historical aerial images, e.g., those acquired for regional cartographic purposes, are extremely valuable resources for studying the evolution and movement of a glacier in the past. This work analyzed the evolution of the Belvedere Glacier by means of structure from motion techniques applied to digitalized historical aerial images combined with more recent digital surveys, either from aerial platforms or UAVs. This allowed the monitoring of an Alpine glacier with high resolution and geometrical accuracy over a long span of time, covering the period 1977–2019. In this context, digital surface models of the area at different epochs were computed and jointly analyzed, retrieving the morphological dynamics of the Belvedere Glacier. The integration of datasets dating back to earlier times with those referring to surveys carried out with more modern technologies exploits at its full potential the information that at first glance could be thought obsolete, proving how historical photogrammetric datasets are a remarkable heritage for glaciological studies. Still, the interplay among the scattering mechanisms taking place at such a high incidence and their implications on the backscatter information content is often disregarded. This article investigates, through an experimental and numerical study, the S-1 sensitivity to the surface soil moisture (SSM) over agricultural fields observed at low (~33°) and high (~43°) incidence angles and quantifies the impact of the incidence angle on the SSM retrieval accuracy. The study sites are the Apulian Tavoliere (Italy) and REd de MEDición de la HUmedad del Suelo (REMEDHUS) (Spain), which are both instrumented with a hydrologic network continuously measuring SSM. At low incidence angles, results confirm that for crops such as wheat and barley, dominated in C-band by surface scattering, there exists a good sensitivity of S-1 VV to SSM. At high incidence angles, the sensitivity to SSM holds through the combination of the soil attenuated and double bounce scattering. Conversely, over crops dominated by volume scattering, such as sugar beet, the S-1 VV signal is not correlated with the in situ SSM observations, neither at low nor at high incidence. For all the crops, the sensitivity of S-1 to SSM in VH is found significantly lower than in VV. The impact of the incidence angle on the SSM retrieval has been studied with a recursive algorithm based on a short-term change detection approach. An upper and lower bounds for the worsening of the S-1 VV retrieval performance at far versus near range observations have been estimated. In the worst-case scenario, the root mean square error (RMSE) increases from ~0.056 m 3 /m 3 , at low incidence, to ~0.071 m 3 /m 3 , at high incidence. The mechanism that lowers the retrieval accuracy at high incidence angles is further investigated in the synthetic experiment and its impact on the RMSE is estimated in terms of the volume scattering contribution. [Termes IGN] Toscane (Italie)Résumé : (auteur) This paper presents a spatial-based decision support system (DSS) to assist public and private forest managers in the analysis of potential feasibility in payments for forest ecosystem services (PES) for the prevention of soil erosion. The model quantifies the maximum willingness to pay (WTP) of managers of a reservoir to prevent soil loss. The minimum willingness to accept (WTA) of forest owners for the activation of a private market is also computed. The comparison of WTP and WTA identifies the forest area where PES are ideally feasible with additional potential for compensation to enable the schemes. The DSS highlights forest idiosyncrasies as well as local socio-economic and geomorphological characteristics influencing PES suitability at a geographic level. The potential applications and future improvements of the model are also discussed. [Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Key message: A multi-criteria analysis can be an interesting tool to assess the effects of silvicultural treatments on ecosystem services supply. In the degraded forests, thinning has a positive effect on the provision of ecosystem services such as timber and bioenergy production, climate change mitigation, and recreational attractiveness.
Context: The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment highlights the importance of the ecosystem services for human well-being and for maintaining conditions for life on Earth. Silvicultural treatments can improve the provision of ecosystem services to increase local communities’ well-being.
Aims: The aim of this study is to understand the effects of two-forest restoration practices (selective thinning and thinning from below) on three ecosystem services (wood production, climate change mitigation, and recreational opportunities) in an Italian case study.
Methods: A multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) was performed to compare the effects of three forest restoration scenarios (baseline, selective thinning, thinning from below) on ecosystem services. Wood production was estimated considering the local market prices and the wood volumes harvested, while climate change mitigation was quantified through the C-stock and C-sequestration changes in carbon pools due to the silvicultural treatments. The recreational activities were assessed through a questionnaire survey. A sample of 200 visitors was interviewed face-to-face to estimate the impact of thinning on recreational activities.
Results: The results of the MCDA show that the selective thinning scenario is the optimal forest restoration practice to increase the recreational attractiveness and the wood production in the study area.
Conclusion: The results concerning the effects of the silvicultural treatments on ecosystem services supply are an important tool to support decision makers.Numéro de notice : A2021-104 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01020-5 Date de publication en ligne : 18/01/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01020-5 Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=96887

[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (auteur) Interaction between land subsidence and sea level rise (SLR) increases the hazard in coastal areas, mainly for deltas, characterized by flat topography and with great social, ecological, and economic value. Coastal areas need continuous monitoring as a support for human intervention to reduce the hazard. Po River Delta (PRD, northern Italy) in the past was affected by high values of artificial land subsidence: even if at low rates, anthropogenic settlements are currently still in progress and produce an increase of hydraulic risk due to the loss of surface elevation both of ground and levees. Many authors have provided scenarios for the next decades with increased flooding in densely populated areas. In this work, a contribution to the understanding future scenarios based on the morphological changes that occurred in the last century on the PRD coastal area is provided: planimetric variations are reconstructed using two archival cartographies (1911 and 1924), 12 multi-temporal high-resolution aerial photogrammetric surveys (1933, 1944, 1949, 1955, 1962, 1969, 1977, 1983, 1990, 1999, 2008, and 2014), and four LiDAR (light detection and ranging) datasets (acquired in 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2018): obtained results, in terms of emerged surfaces variations, are linked to the available land subsidence rates (provided by leveling, GPS—global positioning system, and SAR—synthetic aperture radar data) and to the expected SLR values, to perform scenarios of the area by 2100: results of this work will be useful to mitigate the hazard by increasing defense systems and preventing the risk of widespread flooding.
