[Termes IGN] ombreRésumé : (auteur) This paper proposes an accurate multi-view stereo method for image-based 3D reconstruction that features robustness in the presence of occlusions. The new method offers improvements in dealing with two fundamental image matching problems. The first concerns the selection of the support window model, while the second centers upon accurate visibility estimation for each pixel. The support window model is based on an approximate 3D support plane described by a depth and two per-pixel depth offsets. For the visibility estimation, the multi-view constraint is initially relaxed by generating separate support plane maps for each support image using a modified PatchMatch algorithm. Then the most likely visible support image, which represents the minimum visibility of each pixel, is extracted via a discrete Markov Random Field model and it is further augmented by parameter clustering. Once the visibility is estimated, multi-view optimization taking into account all redundant observations is conducted to achieve optimal accuracy in the 3D surface generation for both depth and surface normal estimates. Finally, multi-view consistency is utilized to eliminate any remaining observational outliers. The proposed method is experimentally evaluated using well-known Middlebury datasets, and results obtained demonstrate that it is amongst the most accurate of the methods thus far reported via the Middlebury MVS website. Moreover, the new method exhibits a high completeness rate. [Termes IGN] viticultureRésumé : (auteur) Physiological measurements are considered to be the most accurate way of assessing plant water status, but they might also be time-consuming, costly and intrusive. Since visible (VIS)-to-shortwave infrared (SWIR) imaging spectrometers are able to monitor various bio-chemical alterations in the leaf, such narrow-band instruments may offer a faster, less expensive and non-destructive alternative. This requires an intelligent downsizing of broad and noisy hyperspectra into the few most physiologically-sensitive wavelengths. In the current study, hyperspectral signatures of water-stressed grapevine leaves (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) were correlated to values of midday leaf water potential (Ψl), stomatal conductance (gs) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) under controlled conditions, using the partial least squares-regression (PLS-R) technique. It was found that opposite reflectance trends at 530–550 nm and around 1500 nm – associated with independent changes in photoprotective pigment contents and water availability, respectively – were indicative of stress-induced alterations in Ψl, gs and NPQ. Furthermore, combining the spectral responses at these VIS and SWIR regions yielded three normalized water balance indices (WABIs), which were superior to various widely-used reflectance models in predicting physiological values at both the leaf and canopy levels. The potential of the novel WABI formulations also under field conditions demonstrates their applicability for water status monitoring and irrigation scheduling. [Termes IGN] JaponRésumé : (Auteur) The temporal variations (diurnal and annual) in arboreal (εTree) and bare soil (εSoil) dielectric constants and their correlation with precipitation were examined for several trees in Japan. A significant (1 σ (standard deviation) and 2 σ) εTree increase is observed after rainfall at 89.8% and 90.5% probability. However, rainfall does not always induce significant εTree increases. Rainfall of more than 5 mm/day can induce 1 σ εTree Tree increase at a 59.6% probability. In order to examine whether the increase in εTree affects the L-band σ0 variation in a forest, the four-year temporal variation of the L-band backscattering coefficient (σ0) was estimated from observations by the Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar. Observed maximum absolute deviations from the mean over the forest area were 1.0 and 1.2 dB for σHH0 and σHV0, respectively, and 4.0 and 3.0 dB over open land. σ0 and rainfall correlations show that εTree and σForest0 are proportional to precipitation integrated over seven or eight days; εSoil and σOpen land0 are proportional to precipitation integrated over three days. This finding indicates that εTree variations influence σForest areas0. A stronger correlation between σHV0 and precipitation is observed in several sites with low σHV0, where less biomass is expected, and several sites with high σHV0, where more biomass is expected. A weaker correlation between σHV0 and precipitation is observed for several sites with high σ- sub>HV0. These differences may be explained by the different contributions of double bounce scattering and potential transpiration, which is a measure of the ability of the atmosphere to remove water from the surface through the processes of transpiration. The two other results were as follows: 1) The functional relation between aboveground biomass and σ0 showed dependence on precipitation data, this being an effect connected with seasonal changes of the εTree. This experiment reinforces the fact that the dry season is preferable for retrieval of woody biomass from inversion of the functional dependence of SAR backscatter and for avoiding the influence of rainfall. 2) The complex dielectric constant for a tree trunk, which is measured between 0.2 and 6 GHz, indicates that free water is dominant in the measured tree. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) Current research into the fusion of hyperspectral imagery (HI) and full waveform LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has relied on first processing the full waveform LiDAR (FWL) data to a set of discrete returns before merging because the data structure and sampling interval of HI and FWL are distinctly different. However, additional information about target properties can potentially be recovered if the waveform shape is preserved in the fusion process. This paper proposes a “voxelization” method to register FWL data to HI by dividing the waveform data into voxels, and then synthesizing all waveforms which intersect a voxel column into one three-dimensional superposition waveform: the synthesized waveform (SWF). A vertical energy distribution coefficients (VEDC) feature is proposed for extracting features from SWF, and then the SWF and HI are fused to form a complete feature space for classification. A pairwise classifier was adapted and completed using both Maximum Likelihood and Support Vector Machine classifiers for the combined SWF/HI features. Results show that this method of generating SWF from FWL data can effectively preserve information from the original waveforms, and the fusion of SWF and HI enhanced land cover classification compared to both using either data set alone or the merging of HI with a discrete LiDAR return point cloud. The Mineral and Gas Identifier (MAGI) is a wide-swath (programmable up to ±42° off nadir) moderate spectral resolution thermal-infrared (TIR) imaging spectrometer that spans the 7.1- to 12.7-μm spectral window in 32 uniform and contiguous channels. Its spectral resolution enables improved discrimination of rock and mineral types, greatly expanded gas-detection capability, and generally more accurate land-surface temperature retrievals. The instrument design arose from trade studies between spectral resolution, spectral range, and instrument sensitivity and has now been validated by flight data acquired with the completed sensor. It offers a potential prototype for future space-based TIR instruments, which will require much higher spectral resolution than is currently available in order to address more detailed climate, anthropogenic, and solid Earth science questions.
