[Termes IGN] zone ruraleRésumé : (Auteur) Temporal decorrelation is one of the main limitations of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry. For nonurban areas, its mechanism is very complex, as it is very dependent of vegetation types and their temporal dynamics, actual land use, soil types, and climatological circumstances. Yet, an a priori assessment and comprehension of the expected coherence levels of interferograms are required for designing new satellite missions (in terms of frequency, resolution, and repeat orbits), for choosing the optimal data sets for a specific application, and for feasibility studies for new interferometric applications. Although generic models for temporal decorrelation have been proposed, their parameters depend heavily on the land use in the area of interest. Here, we report the behavior of temporal decorrelation for a specific class of land use: pasture on drained peat soils. We use L-, C-, and X-band SAR observations from the Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS), European Remote Sensing Satellite, Envisat, RADARSAT-2, and TerraSAR-X missions. We present a dedicated temporal decorrelation model using three parameters and demonstrate how coherent information can be retrieved as a function of frequency, repeat intervals, and coherence estimation window sizes. New satellites such as Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2, with shorter repeat intervals than their predecessors, would enhance the possibility to obtain a coherent signal over pasture. [Termes IGN] traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (auteur) The differential GPS (DGPS) performance can be affected by the ionospheric variability, especially in low-latitude areas. We evaluated the behavior of the ionospheric variability in low-latitude areas in the 11-year cycle of the solar activity. During periods of solar maximum, the percentage of the daily maximum gradient that exceeds 50 mm/km has reached 73 % in 2001. Assuming that the baseline length is 20 km, the gradient larger than 50 mm/km can lead to more than 1.0-m ranging error, which is significant if we want to achieve meter-level accuracy with DGPS. An ionospheric gradient model built from a number of reference stations is proposed for estimating the differential ionospheric delays. The effectiveness of the model is demonstrated under both the quiet and active ionospheric conditions in low-latitude areas. For a short baseline length of 16.9 km in Hong Kong, the horizontal positioning accuracy can be improved by 41 and 61 % during active solar years and geomagnetic storms, respectively. The improvements show that the model is capable of reducing the spatial decorrelation caused by the ionospheric variability, and the model can be used in DGPS especially over the regions, such as low-latitude areas, where the large ionospheric variability happens frequently. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (auteur) There has been an increasing interest in mapping and monitoring urban land use/land cover using remote sensing techniques. However, there still exist quite a number of challenges in deriving urban extent and its expansion density from remote sensing data quantitatively. This study utilized Landsat TM/ETM+ remote sensing data to assess urban expansion and its thermal characteristics with a case study in the city of Changsha, China. We proposed a new approach for quantitatively determining built-up area, its expansion density and their respective relationship with land surface temperature (LST) patterns. An urban expansion metric was also developed using a moving window mechanism to identify urban built-up area and its expansion density based on selected threshold values. The study suggested that urban extent and its expansion density, as well as surface thermal characteristics and patterns could be identified through quantitatively derived remotely sensed indices and LST, which offer meaningful characteristics in quantifying urban expansion density and urban thermal pattern. Results from the case study demonstrated that: (1) the built-up area and urban expansion density have significantly increased in the city of Changsha from 1990 to 2001; and (2) the differences of urban expansion densities correspond to thermal effects, where a high percentage of imperviousness is usually associated with the area covered by high surface temperature.
Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) Very little existing literature has addressed the issues of the perceived usefulness of 3D visualizations over 2D and the use of cartographic shadow representations in the planning community. Urban planning has moved toward a 3D, geographic-information-system-centric, and functional decision support framework. This study aims to examine the preferences of urban planning professionals with respect to 2D and 3D visualizations in a case study. The authors built a 3D representation of a proposed building along with the existing urban environment in Queenstown, New Zealand and conducted a usefulness test through a survey and interview. Based on the survey, the study evaluated the degree of task utility perceived in each visualization method, the effect on the mental image, and shadow representation preferences. The findings support the literature that the benefits of using a 2D or 3D model are closely related to the types of planning tasks undertaken. The findings also reveal a complex view of planning activities, suggesting that planners themselves cannot be treated as a single group for research purposes.
