[Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) In order to improve biodiversity management in the Wellington region of New Zealand, it is necessary to make an inventory of the indigenous forest-where is it, and what type is it? The single greatest impediment to making a spatially (i.e., 1:50,000 scale) and thematically detailed inventory from satellite imagery has been the topography of the three mountainous ranges in the Wellington region. The effective irradiance of incoming light varies with slope orientation, as does the proportion of light that is reflected towards the satellite (the bidirectional reflectance). In this paper, we show how satellite imagery may be processed to standardised spectral reflectance, which is a property of the vegetation alone, independent of sun position, slope, and view direction. Because of this, the use of automatic methods to map vegetation and provide spatially and thematically detailed maps is greatly simplified. Using this method, we produce a land-cover map of the Wellington region, with eight classes, to a classification accuracy of approximately 95%. We also show how the proportions of conifer, broadleaved, and beech trees may be determined for indigenous forest to provide a framework for forest-type inventory. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The backscattering coefficient ä from a time series of ERS-2 SAR data showed high correlation (r 2 =0.94) and high sensitivity to the observed surface soil moisture at a field scale. The observations agreed well with the simulations from the two surface scattering models tested in the study area. A single coincidence of the ERS-2 and RADARSAT missions, with two different polarizations, provided an opportunity to estimate soil moisture over a large area by inverting the Dubois model. The estimates were validated with the field observations over a small area and are in good agreement with standard error of estimate (SEE) equal to 1.01 cm3 cm-3. Furthermore, different soil moisture estimation methods were tested and compared with the observations to better understand the temporal and spatial variability of this important parameter. Soil moisture at a point was simulated using three hydrological models and compared with the radar backscattering and the point observations. There is a large variation in the responses among them. Simple statistical approaches viz., coefficient of variation and principal component analysis were used for mapping the spatial patterns of soil moisture over a large area using a time series of ERS-2 data. These simple methods helped to map areas where the moisture availability is not varying much. This information about soil moisture distribution is of vital importance to the hydrological processes especially the variable source area concept. [Termes IGN] pixelRésumé : (Auteur) Matching the diffraction -limited optical resolution with the appropriate detector size is a fundamental design requirement for digital imaging systems. A useful Design Function based on the Airy disk is lF/p = 0.82. Where is the average wavelength, F is the camera F-number, and p is the detector sampling pitch (pixel size). A second metric, attributed to Schade and reported by Holst (1999), produces an often used Design Function: lF1p = 1. Examples demonstrate the use of the Design Functions to determine basic parameters, F-number, focal length, aperture diameter, and pixel size for an imaging system. Pixel size is selected from commercially available arrays and the other parameters are estimated given the required ground sampled distance (GSD) with either of the two Design Functions. One of the primary uses for the Design Functions is to provide optical systems engineers with a simple, fast, and proven means of arriving at first-order estimates -for electro-optical camera designs. It follows that estimating costs for building large space camera systems should be less complicated.
