[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) This study reports the development of a new instrumental approach to ground based remote sensing of tropospheric water vapor. It is based on the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS)-technique using high-resolution absorption spectra of solar radiation in the visible and near infrared spectral region. The investigations include theoretical aspects of the measurement process, simulations for optimizing instrumental parameters, design and construction of the spectrometer system, as well as validation of the technique by comparisons with independent methods. The first step was the implementation of a numerical radiative transfer model which simulates the process of molecular line absorption in the troposphere. It computes theoretical transmission functions of the atmosphere by calculating superposed individual transitions on a line-by-line basis. The line parameters of the vibrationrotational transitions were taken from the molecular database HITRAN. The model was used for determining the specifications of the spectrometer system, such as the optimum spectral intervals for the DOAS measurements. On the basis of these simulations a dedicated DOAS system was developed, which comprises a Sun tracking telescope with integrated premonochromator and a highresolution Echelle grating spectrometer called SAMOS (Solar Atmospheric MOnitoring Spectrometer). The spectrometer prototype is characterized by a high spectral resolution of better then 2 picometers over the entire measurable range and an integrated absolute wavelength calibration based on simultaneous measurements of neon reference spectra. The algorithm for processing SAMOS spectra is based on a least squares fit of the radiative transfer model to the measured spectra by adjusting the parameter for the precipitable water vapor (PW). First results revealed offsets between retrievals from different spectral intervals, implying significant errors in the HITRAN line parameters. Therefore line strength parameters were estimated using a dataset of radiosonde soundings and simultaneous SAMOS measurements, which greatly enhanced the redundancy of the retrievals. The new instrument was deployed in several field campaigns with collocated water vapor radiometers (WVR) and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, in which the feasibility of the solar spectrometry technique was proven. The comparison of SAMOS results with PW estimates from GPS data yielded a statistical agreement within 1 kg/m. However, systematic deviations were observed which are likely to arise from inherent effects of the GPS meteorology technique. The accuracy analysis of the solar spectrometry approach revealed that the largest fraction of retrieval error arises from uncertainties in the line parameters. The low sensitivity to model assumptions on meteorological profiles enables accurate retrievals of PW, but was found to render the possibility of deriving vertical humidity profiles from SAMOS spectra impracticable. The new technique can contribute to the validation and calibration of GPS water vapor estimates for meteorological applications. GPS estimates of integral precipital water vapor (IPWV) are compared with simultaneous measurements of collocated Water Vapor Radiometers (WVR), as well as atmospheric refraction models for validation of GPS for meteorological applications.
Based on a one year data set of continuous GPS estimates and WVR observations at ETH Zurich a standard deviation of 1.54 mm and an offset of 0.54 mm IPWV is found between the two techniques. The analysis of several dedicated observation campaigns carried out at different sites in Europe and on Hawaii revealed offsets between GPS estimates and WVR observations.
The instrumental methods are also compared with a numerical model of the troposphere using ground meteorological observations and radiosondes from the station Payerne of the Swiss meteorological network (ANETZ). The modeling results, obtained with a software package performing four-dimensional interpolations by collocation yield a standard deviation of 2.88 mm and a bias of 2.23 mm IPWV with respect to the GPS derived time series of IPWV. Furthermore a clear seasonal dependency of the GPS - WVR differences is recognized. Mainly the periods dominated by strong fluctuations of water vapor during summer and autumn months degrade the agreement between the two techniques.
Because of the high correlation between GPS estimated tropospheric parameters and the height component, potential error sources are investigated.
The accuracy of GPS-derived IPWV in near real-time for consideration in weather forecasting is degraded due to insufficient satellite orbit quality. Investigations on the impact of implementing predicted orbit information on GPS water vapor retrievals showed that the accuracy degrades by a factor of about 2 compared to results obtained with final precise orbits as released by the International GPS Service (IGS) about two weeks after the observations.
Finally the potential of GPS for resolving three-dimensional distributions of tropospheric water vapor by means of the tomographic technique is investigated and applied within this work. For this purpose a software package called AWATOS (Atmospheric WAter vapor TOmography Software) was developed. In order to validate the tomographic approach a dedicated field experiment was carried out on the Big Island of Hawaii, USA. Tomographic results based on the extremely dense Continuous GPS (CGPS) network in the Mt. Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcano area are presented. They are compared to other independent techniques, such as radiosondes, Water Vapor Radiometers, and a high resolution solar spectrometer.

Beside many other disruptive factors, microwave observations are influenced to a great extent by the spatial and temporal highly variable behaviour of the Ionosphere. This leads usually to a change in signal travel time, but may also cause the complete loss of the signal. The fundamental parameter which describes the condition of the ionosphere is the total electron content (TEC). Because the ionosphere is a dispersive medium, TEC can be determined by measuring the travel time difference between two simultaneously transmitted signals of different frequency. Therefore, the German satellite tracking system PRARE (Precise Range And Range Rate Equipment) on ESA's remote sensing satellite ERS2 is also operated on two coherent frequencies. Unique with PRARE is the fact that the ionospheric parameters can alternatively be calculated from quasisimultaneous independent range and doppler measurements of the PRARE space segment. This method is called Differenced Range Versus Integrated Doppler (DRVID) and makes use of the different refraction index of code and phase measurements in refractive media such as the ionosphere. After a short introduction to the subject of this thesis the main characteristics of the PRARE system are presented, followed by the description of the properties of the Earth's atmospheric layers under special consideration of the refractivity and the spatial and temporal variations of the ionosphere. This more general part is completed by a survey of the presently used methods and models for the derivation of TEC. The data preprocessing of PRARE range and doppler measurements is the basis to derive the PRARE typical DRVID method. It is shown that this procedure is suitable to precisely derive the TEC and to detect multipath on PRARE range observations caused by the solar array of ERS-2. Different ideas for the necessary relative and absolute calibration of PRARE TEC values are discussed and carried out using two global ionospheric models, IRI95 and CODEGIM. The following comparison of simultaneous PRARE DRVID data with each other and with independent twofrequency TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter observations shows their high reliability and quality. It is shown that especially under increasing solar activity and by further extension of the PRARE ground tracking network over the oceans the singlefrequency ERS-2 altimeter observations can be improved by means of PRARE TEC measurements. Finally, as an additional result of the experience gained during this work, some concrete suggestions for improvement of the PRARE system in case of operation on future satellite missions are presented.
