[Termes IGN] troposphèreRésumé : (auteur) In this work, we compare IASI-retrieved vertical water vapour profiles and related precipitable water over a complex region, namely the Rhine Valley area, during the pre-operational period of IASI exploitation (June–August 2007). Both IASI water vapour mixing ratio profiles and integrated water vapour content are retrieved from L1C radiances spectra using two techniques and compared with water vapour related observations acquired during the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS) field campaign that took place in this area at that time (i.e. lidars, radiosoundings and a global positioning system - GPS - station network). This work addresses the issue of IASI vertical spatial resolution and its capability to detect two-layer water vapour structures such as those observed in a mountainous area and which play an important role in convective initiation or inhibition. We found that this capability mostly relies on the type of a-priori background vector (climatology or space-time colocated ECMWF analysis), which is used within the retrieval scheme. Systematic comparison of water vapour products derived from 71 IASI spectra confirms that IASI can retrieve water vapour amounts in 2 km width layers, in the lower troposphere, with an accuracy of approximately 10%. [Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne lidar systems have the potential to produce extremely accurate terrain information at high spatial densities. However, to meet stringent accuracy requirements and minimize systematic errors, proper calibration of the lidar system is required. "Boresighting" is a technique used to correct for some of these systematic errors and improve the spatial alignment of lidar passes. One challenge with boresighting is the mensuration accuracy to which a known point can be located in overlapping low density lidar strips. To address this issue, a raised Hexagonal Retro-Reflective Lidar ground Target (hrrt) is introduced. The target was optimized for precise mensuration at low point densities. The mensuration model is based on a least squares hexagon fitting approach and is proven to produce mensuration accuracies of 5 cm horizontal and 4 cm vertical (1-sigma) at ~2 pts/m2. To demonstrate a practical application, the hrrt's are used as tie points in a rigorous boresight adjustment to compute lidar strip misalignment parameters (roll, pitch, heading, and range bias). The adjustment results show that accurate boresight parameters are recovered along with their associated uncertainties. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning systems are steadily increasing in many fields of engineering, geoscience and architecture namely for fast data acquisition, 3-D modeling and mapping. Similarly to other precision instruments, these systems provide measurements with implicit systematic errors. Systematic errors are physically corrected by manufacturers before delivery and sporadically afterwards. The approach presented herein tackles the raw observables acquired by a laser scanner with additional parameters, a set of geometric calibration parameters that model the systematic error of the instrument to achieve the most accurate point cloud outputs, improving eventual workflow owing to less filtering, better registration and best 3D modeling. This paper presents a fully automatic strategy to calibrate geometrically terrestrial laser scanning datasets. The strategy is tested with multiple scans taken by a FARO FOCUS 3D, a phase-based terrestrial laser scanner. A calibration with local parameters for datasets is undertaken to improve the raw observables and a weighted mathematical index is proposed to select the most significant set of additional parameters. The improvements achieved are exposed, highlighting the necessity of correcting the terrestrial laser scanner before handling multiple data sets.
