[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Small footprint full-waveform airborne lidar systems offer large opportunities for improved forest characterization. To take advantage of full-waveform information, this paper presents a new processing method based on the decomposition of waveforms into a sum of parametric functions. The method consists of an enhanced peak detection algorithm combined with advanced echo modelling including Gaussian and generalized Gaussian models. The study focuses on the qualification of the extracted geometric information. Resulting 3D point clouds were compared to the point cloud provided by the operator. 40 to 60% additional points were detected mainly in the lower part of the canopy and in the low vegetation. Their contribution to Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and Canopy Height Models (CHMs) was then analysed. The quality of DTMs and CHM-based heights was assessed using field measurements on black pine plots under various topographic and stand characteristics. Results showed only slight improvements, up to 5 cm bias and standard deviation reduction. However both tree crowns and undergrowth were more densely sampled thanks to the detection of weak and overlapping echoes, opening up opportunities to study the detailed structure of forest stands. The paper gives an insight in some basic developments and describes the historical development of geodesy by pointing out and demonstrating the relations between the Earth's shape, geolocation and time measurements from the ancient times to the present time. Since the ancient times the flow of time was a natural measure of man's movements in the physical space and of movements of the Sun, the Moon, the planets and all the other celestial bodies in the vastness of space. Providing the scientific means of how to reference the 'where' and 'when' through millennia, geodesy enables to put the 'who' or "what" in the spatio-temporal space and to present the answers to "why1 and 'how' questions. Astronomy, geodesy, surveying and geography along with cartography, are the sciences that naturally combine the knowledge about space and time providing the natural and social sciences a framework for the development of the constantly growing knowledge of humankind. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Editeur) The 3D imaging industry has grown rapidly despite inconsistencies in terminology among vendors, lack of uniform methods for testing terrestrial laser scanners, and data exchange challenges. The presence of industry standards can help product vendors and end users to overcome these challenges and thus further accelerate the successful adoption of this exciting technology. In this article, Alan M. Aindow, vice chairman of the ASTM International E57 Technical Committee on 3D Imaging Systems, describes the scope and benefits of this Committee that works on developing industry standards for terrestrial laser scanners. [Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents the use of new remote sensing data acquired from airborne full-waveform lidar systems for hydrological applications. Indeed, the knowledge of an accurate topography and a landcover classification is a prior knowledge for any hydrological and erosion model. Badlands tend to be the most significant areas of erosion in the world with the highest erosion rate values. Monitoring and predicting erosion within badland mountainous catchments is highly strategic due to the arising downstream consequences and the need for natural hazard mitigation engineering.
Additionally, beyond the elevation information, full-waveform lidar data are processed to extract the amplitude and the width of echoes. They are related to the target reflectance and geometry. We will investigate the relevancy of using lidar-derived Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and the potentiality of the amplitude and the width information for 3-D landcover classification. Considering the novelty and the complexity of such data, they are presented in details as well as guidelines to process them. The morphological validation of DTMs is then performed via the computation of hydrological indexes and photo-interpretation. Finally, a 3-D landcover classification is performed using a Support Vector Machine classifier. The use of an ortho-rectified optical image in the classification process as well as full-waveform lidar data for hydrological purposes is finally discussed.Numéro de notice : A2009-592 Affiliation des auteurs : MATIS+Ext (1993-2011) Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.5194/hess-13-1531-2009 Date de publication en ligne : 26/08/2009 En ligne : http://dx.doi.org/10.5194/hess-13-1531-2009 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33545
