Determination of appropriate threshold levels for change/no-change identification is a critical factor that influences change detection result accuracy. The most used method to determine the threshold values is based on the standard deviation (SD) from the mean, assuming the amount of change (due to increase or decrease in brightness values) to be symmetrically distributed on a standard normal curve, which is not always true. Considering the asymmetrical nature of distribution histogram for the two sides, this study proposes a relatively simple and easy ‘Independent Two-Step’ thresholding approach for optimal threshold value determination for spectrally increased and decreased part using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) difference image. Six NDVI differencing images from 2007 to 2009 of different seasons were tested for inter-annual or seasonal land cover change/no-change identification. The relative performances of the proposed and two other methods towards the sensitivity of distributions were tested and an improvement of ~3% in overall accuracy and of ~0.04 in Kappa was attained with the Proposed Method. This study demonstrated the importance of consideration of normality of data distributions in land-cover change/no-change analysis. The SAR data do not suffer from the low sun elevation and frequent cloud cover, which often complicate the use of optical wavelengths for LAI retrieval in the area. The analysis was based on a large number of environmental satellite (ENVISAT) advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) alternating polarization vertical polarization (VV)/horizontal polarization (HH) single-look-complex images covering several test sites, boreal and subarctic, during summers 2003-2006. The swath range from IS1 to IS7 was studied. In all test sites, a linear regression with the VV/HH backscattering ratio as the independent variable could typically be used for the estimation of LAI. All swaths could be used for the estimation, but larger incidence angles generally performed better. The best results were obtained for swath IS6. The swaths could be used also together, but better results were obtained using the diverse swaths individually. The LAI estimation error decreased essentially exponentially with the number of pixels averaged to give one backscattering value. The LAI estimation accuracy for a set of average quality ASAR images of swath IS6 reached 0.1 when the averaging number of pixels was 33 150, which would correspond to an area of about 2.2 km2 for images with no overlap. The spatial LAI estimation error decreased with the number of images covering the same area. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Lake resources can be negatively affected by environmental stressors originating from multiple sources and different spatial scales. Shoreline development, in particular, can negatively affect lake resources through decline in habitat quality, physical disturbance, and impacts on fisheries. The development of remote sensing techniques that efficiently characterize shoreline development in a regional context could greatly improve management approaches for protecting and restoring lake resources. The goal of this study was to develop an approach using high-resolution aerial photographs to quantify and assess docks as indicators of shoreline development. First, we describe a dock analysis workflow that can be used to quantify the spatial extent of docks using aerial images. Our approach incorporates pixel-based classifiers with object-based techniques to effectively analyze high-resolution digital imagery. Second, we apply the analysis workflow to quantify docks for 4261 lakes managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Overall accuracy of the analysis results was 98.4% (87.7% based on View the MathML source) after manual post-processing. The analysis workflow was also 74% more efficient than the time required for manual digitization of docks. These analyses have immediate relevance for resource planning in Minnesota, whereas the dock analysis workflow could be used to quantify shoreline development in other regions with comparable imagery. These data can also be used to better understand the effects of shoreline development on aquatic resources and to evaluate the effects of shoreline development relative to other stressors. [Termes IGN] image hyperspectraleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we address a spectral unmixing problem for hyperspectral images by introducing multiple-kernel learning (MKL) coupled with support vector machines. To effectively solve issues of spectral unmixing, an MKL method is explored to build new boundaries and distances between classes in multiple-kernel Hilbert space (MKHS). Integrating reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs) spanned by a series of different basis kernels in MKHS is able to provide increased power in handling general nonlinear problems than traditional single-kernel learning in RKHS. The proposed method is developed to solve multiclass unmixing problems. To validate the proposed MKL-based algorithm, both synthetic data and real hyperspectral image data were used in our experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has a strong ability to capture interclass spectral differences and improve unmixing accuracy, compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms tested. [Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (Auteur) Local governments frequently use parcel maps or other spatial data for decision-making, but much of this data is often inaccurate and outdated, producing a negative influence on the expected outcome. Remote sensing can provide accurate and current high-resolution imagery. However, one major bottleneck to the integration of high-resolution imagery into existing geographic information systems is the issue of positional accuracy of the existing line-work within the vector GIS database, making it difficult to match with imagery. This paper presents a vector-to-imagery conflation approach to improve the positional accuracy of digital parcel maps by conflating the vector parcel maps to make it consistent with high-resolution imagery. Road intersections are automatically extracted from imagery and used as control points. A relaxation labeling algorithm is used to find the matches between the two road intersection point sets from vector and imagery. The links are created from the matched point pairs and are used to perform a piecewise transformation. The test results show that this approach can improve the accuracy of vector parcel maps significantly. It is a very cost-effective method and has great potential to save considerable time and money for local governments to upgrade their inaccurate vector datasets.
