Laser scans contain detailed geometric information, but still require interpretation of the data for making it useable for mapping purposes. A fundamental step in the transformation of the data into objects involves their segmentation into consistent units. Such units should follow some predefined rules, and result in salient regions guided by the desire that the individual segments represent object or object-parts within the scene. Nonetheless, due to the scene complexity and the variety of objects, a segmentation using only a single cue does not suffice. Considering the availability of additional data sources such as color images, more information can be integrated in the data partitioning process and ultimately into the reconstruction scheme. We propose segmentation of terrestrial laser scanning data by the integration of range and color content and by using multiple cues. This concept raises questions regarding their mode of integration, and definition of the expected outcome. We show, that while individual segmentation based on given cues have their own limitations, their integration provide a more coherent partitioning that has better potential for further processing. Experiments show that the proposed segmentation methodology yield physically meaningful segments, which surpass those obtained via segmentation of the individual channels. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, we test the potential of two different classification algorithms, namely the spectral angle mapper (SAM) and object-based classifier for mapping the land use/cover characteristics using a Hyperion imagery. We chose a study region that represents a typical Mediterranean setting in terms of landscape structure, composition and heterogeneous land cover classes. Accuracy assessment of the land cover classes was performed based on the error matrix statistics. Validation points were derived from visual interpretation of multispectral high resolution QuickBird-2 satellite imagery. Results from both the classifiers yielded more than 70% classification accuracy. However, the object-based classification clearly outperformed the SAM by 7.91% overall accuracy (OA) and a relatively high kappa coefficient. Similar results were observed in the classification of the individual classes. Our results highlight the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing data as well as object-based classification approach for mapping heterogeneous land use/cover in a typical Mediterranean setting. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We consider sparsity-driven change detection (CD) for human motion indication in through-the-wall radar imaging and urban sensing applications. Stationary targets and clutter are removed via CD, which converts a populated scene into a sparse scene of a few human targets moving inside enclosed structures and behind walls. We establish appropriate CD models for various possible human motions, ranging from translational motions to sudden short movements of the limbs, head, and/or torso. These models permit scene reconstruction within the compressive sensing framework. Results based on laboratory experiments show that a sizable reduction in the data volume is achieved using the proposed approach without a degradation in system performance.
